The RPG Battle: PS3 versus Xbox 360

Posted on September 11, 2008 by Alex Donaldson

It seems our articles about the top RPGs coming in October, November and December for Xbox 360 and PS3 caused a bit of a debate amongst people in our comments and elsewhere about just which system has a superior game line-up for RPG fans. We thought this made for a perfect opportunity to view just how many RPGs are coming and how many are already out for each system!

While all this information is available in our database, we figured it’d be useful for those looking to discuss the finer points of each console’s line-up to have a list all in one place. The tables below are presented in no particular order, and do not reflect when games were or are to be released. Here we go... Please read the FAQ before commenting! FAQ:
Q: Hey, where’s...?
A: If we’ve missed something, get in touch via the contact page or the comments. We’re not including unannounced projects without names (so you won’t find Untitled Namco RPG on this list) and we’re also not including stuff that hasn’t been 100% confirmed, so while Tales of Vesperia is likely for PS3, we are not putting on this list as it hasn’t been officially announced. We’re not including any PSN or XBLA titles, either – or anything that’s had nothing new released since 2006 – there were a few for both consoles – but they’ve been so quiet let’s assume they got cancelled.

Q: Hey, Mass Effect isn’t Exclusive!
A: Yes, I know it’s on the PC. But This is a battle of the consoles, and in the console world it is 360 exclusive.

Q: What else have you omitted?
A: Expansion packs like Shivering Isles, Two Worlds: The Temptation etc.

Our work here is done. The list seems pretty even overall, with Xbox 360 edging out in the exclusives, but mostly due to ports of lower budget PC RPGs. Draw your own conclusions, people, and feel free to drop them in the comments or on our RPGSite Forums.

Is it just me or is this generation crap for rpgs. Only good multiplatform rpg out now is oblivion and only good exlusive rpg out now is mass effect(even that is sci-fi and non jrpg booo). It also appears that the only good multiplatform on the way is fallout 3. I personally dont care for ffxiii because the 12th one was the worst one ive played so id say only good exclusive otw in my books is versus XIII because its by the KH team and tetsuya and those guys made great games last generation. Itll basically be a more mature KH which is what i always wanted. Oh ya white knight chronicles and star ocean also look promising(level 5 for the win dark cloud 2 is tied for my favourite game of all time).
