Motomu Toriyama: Final Fantasy XIII Season 2 was the concept title for Final Fantasy XIII-2

If you recall back in January 2011 a leaked Square Enix release schedule made mention of a “Final Fantasy XIII Seasons” scheduled for later that year.

Nothing ever came of it and most people had assumed it was just an error or perhaps a rerelease of the first game. We now know that wasn’t the case – in fact it was the concept name for Final Fantasy XIII-2 when it was still in the early stages of the design process.

Speaking at the Game Developers Conference in Taipei, Director Motomu Toriyama shed some light on the game’s initial planning, as well as talks about DLC and other design documentation.

Regarding DLC, XIII-2 marks the first time that Square Enix has done something in terms of a Final Fantasy title. The idea to include downloadable content was decided from the beginning of development, and near the end of the main game’s creation, the team started making the DLC in parallel. Toriyama is of the opinion that DLC will be a requirement in future games.

Being that the conference took place in Asia, Toriyama also shared a bit of information on sales for the region. Final Fantasy XIII has sold over 350,000 units in Asia, which makes it the highest selling PS3 game there to date. XIII-2 has sold through 200,000 copies.

During Q&A someone decided to ask Toriyama about a possible Final Fantasy VII remake. He mentioned Wada’s quote from the other day about not until they’ve made a game that has surpassed VII, but that “As a creator, there’s a bit in there that I can’t agree with.”
