Square: Want more Chrono Trigger? Buy More!

Posted on June 5, 2009 by Alex Donaldson

Square Enix Senior Vice President Shinji Hashimoto revealed that the company wasn't very impressed by the sales of cult RPG classic Chrono Trigger during an E3 interview regarding Front Mission Evolved, a reinvention of the Front Mission franchise.

When asked by RPGSite staff if he could foresee Square handing off other much-loved but neglected franchises to external developers as with Front Mission, he asked what franchise we had in mind.

Our response? Chrono Trigger, of course!

"Why does everyone ask about Chrono Trigger?" he laughed. We told him it's a very loved series. "That's not what the sales tell me!" he responded.

"If people want a sequel, they should buy more!"

We'll be posting the Front Mission interview in full shortly, so stay tuned.

Even if they make a sequel to Chrono Trigger, it would be commercialized and ruined. They would have to replace the game elements that made Chrono Trigger so great with 'popular' RPG elements, like random encounters and 'materia' item-style attacks. That's all Chrono Cross was. The chance of another active time battle RPG without horrible grid-based movement, characters that actually follow you around, no separate battle screen, moving story and great visual appeal is floating somewhere near zero.

  2. Square, WTF is wrong with you?
    mid | May 21, 2010

That has got to be the dumbest thing I've heard all night. Well to be fair, maybe it just didn't occur to this money humping dog that we fans didn't want another version of CT but an actual THIRD game?! Seriously, how STUPID is he? I mean, the Chrono series is great, I'm glad were all in agreement there, but I don't know, haven't we all been crying for a CT3 for well over a decade now?

Who's with me that we should burst into Hashimoto's and then chop off his hand with Chrono's Katana for being fucking stupid?

@everyone who's saying the DS is a kiddy piece of shit

Do any of you assholes know what the fuck you're talking about?! You aren't even bringing up any good reasons to hate the DS, you're just saying that its a kiddy piece of shit. Well guess what? The DS isn't a kiddy piece of shit! The DS has a fantastic library of games that is larger & better than any other handheld that's currently out! Just because it has some kiddy games & some kids play it doesn't mean its a kiddy piece of shit! Their are a lot of kids that play the DS, but who gives a shit?! Their are kids that play the Xbox 360 & PS3, so does that mean the Xbox 360 & PS3 are kiddy? NO! Same thing goes for the DS! So STFU!

Well I guess this proves without a doubt that Square Enix really are money grubbing assholes! We all already knew that, but this only further proves it! They would rather focus on making an endless amount of Final Fantasy sequels, instead of making sequels to some of their other beloved franchises! At this rate we'll never see a sequel to Chrono Trigger, which is awful. So fuck you Shinji Hashimoto!

    @Immature scum will fall.

I agree with most of the stuff you said. All of these assholes who are saying the PS3 & Xbox 360 are the best & that the DS is kiddy should just fuck off! The Xbox 360 & PS3 aren't the best consoles & the DS is definitely NOT kiddy! But I don't think that Final Fantasy should be killed. I think Final Fantasy should go into hibernation for a while. That way Square Enix could stop milking it & could focus on their other beloved franchises, like: Chrono Trigger. But sadly like you said, Square Enix are money loving sellouts & are probably going to continue making an endless amount of Final Fantasy games for many, many years. While they leave their other franchises in the cold.

  7. This is bullsh*t!
    Anonymous | March 23, 2010

Shinji Hashimoto is such a douchebag! Most of the people who love Chrono Trigger still own it for their SNES! So of course the sales for Chrono Trigger on the DS haven't been great! So yhy should people who love Chrono Trigger buy it if they already have it?! God, SpuareEnix are such money grubbing idiots! They would rather focus on milking Final Fantasy, instead of making new games for some of their other beloved franchises! But while I'm ranting about SquareEnix I might as well bring up something stupid I see in the comments. And that's all of you morons who keep saying the DS is a kids toy. The DS isn't a kids toy! It does have some kiddy games & lots of shovelware, but the same could be said of any handheld or home console! And the DS has lots of fantastic games! Like, New Castlevania, New Legend of Zelda, New Super Mario Bros, New Contra, New Pokemon, Lots of remakes & ports of classic RPGs, etc, etc. So everyone who's bashing the DS obviously hasn't looked though the DS's FANTASTIC library of games!

anyone who likes the series played chrono trigger on either the SNES, PS1, or played on an emulator...so why would people pay $40 for a game they have already played probably several times especially on a console where everyone plays pokemon and nintendogs. PS3 is the console to make a sequel on

  10. Plan of Action
    blackfire137 | January 25, 2010

Okay, so, I say all of us who want the sequel we rightly deserve for our previously proven loyalty to Square, Squaresoft, and now Square-Enix, should buy a copy or two of CT:DS each month, and mail each so-bought copy to SE with a letter explaining that each game is bought and paid for explicitly due to this statement, and we want the profits generated to be used specifically for a new entry in the Chrono series -- no more bullshit ports, rereleases, or side-stories (Radical Dreamers is worth a playthrough, but it's time for some progress, and also time to tie up those lose ends -- the obvious epicness explodes all around the very idea of a new Chrono). Any RPG-gamer on the planet would buy a new Chrono.

There isnt much to buy more of except another copy of trigger or cross. What do they expect if only 2 games(not includin ports) exist and people already own them? not worth wastin my money on something i already have.
likewise to what others have said...DS is a GODDAMN KIDS CONSOLE. kids wouldn't have heard of trigger or wouldnt care about it.

It is disgusting the way Square treats this masterpeice... Heck before Square brought out Enix i considered them to be the greatest company i loved em... Anyway all those silly little bitches winging abou "Uhh *slurp slurp* Xbox is the real deal console and Nintendo DS is shit and a silly kids system" and all that can suck a d*!k seriously! Get back and do some research... compare it to anything and you will see the DS is a gamers system regardless of the shovelware flooding the market, forget that. The real evidence is this; which other system is keeping the true 2D classics alive like the DS? None.... DS has New Super Mario, New Castlevania, New Contra, New Zelda, proper RPG's new and remakes etc so fuck all you fools who miss the bulleye and point when they speak on DS. Fuckya... and while where on the topic, FUCK YOU TOO SQUARENIX... Squaresopft rocked... Squarenix are simply sellouts and afficionados at cow milking. FF die already... or atleast fo into hibernation for a while. What about Xenogears? Chrono Trigger? Secret of Mana? psgh...

You know we should boycott Square-Enix until they do release a new chrono trigger. I am sure a good old American boycott would change there greedy douche bag minds! It is too bad they own Enix now, Dragon Warrior is also one of my faves. But I wont buy from Square any more. I hope they fail and someone with a brain buys them out.

If you don't know the roots how game used to be played gtfo. did you know that by the time they released chrono trigger they also released PS1 so people were in transition in game system BUT Chrono Trigger also had highest sell during that time and people actually stuck with SNES for another 3-4 months. Now that should tell you something.

    Mellowcow | July 30, 2009

Look, it's not our fault that they screwed up badly and didn't bring Chrono Trigger into every corner of world...when it was released on the Super Nintendo! You really have to feel bad for the game designers when some high up exec fools around and thinks Japan equals the world, it does not. But instead of saying "Sorry it took so long, but at least here it is with some additions.", we get this. I mean how much more can you intentionally hinder a phenomenal game from it's appropriate success. If Chrono Trigger would have been continued and Final Fantasy discontinued, that might have pushed the genre in terms of gameplay and innovation a lot more. Instead we have these half-movies that "play" the same as it's NES predecessors. Polished but ultimately unexciting.

For all of you who yern for a new chrono game, there was one. It was amazing. It was called Chrono Trigger Crimson Echoes. It was being developed using the original engine as CT on a program called temporal flux(a CT altering program). It was 98% done...untill SE got it's little panties in a bunch and ordered a cease & disist on kajar labs. Squenix was way too worried about their money and not concerned with what their die hard fans wanted...Whats more is that CT:CE wasn't even for profit. KL was trying to deliver to us what we had wanted for 15+ years...free of charge.

  32. Untitled
    Anonymous | June 12, 2009

It sounds to me like a certain executive at Square/Enix - and possibly many more - needs to lose his job. Companies that get too big tend to think they no longer need to listen to their customers and just do their own thing. Look what happened to GM! In all honesty, though, I don't want a "new" Chrono game. I want a thoroughly modern retelling of the original game on the most advanced new system available - the PS3. There's a reason it was so popular. Those characters were magic. We want to walk in their shoes again. We want to hear that incredible score performed by a full orchestra. We want the original world expanded upon. And we want the possibility of a happy future for Crono, Marle, and Lucca. (Alternate realities would not be out of place in a story like this.) If Square/Enix makes this game, it will sell millions of copies. However many millions of dollars it would take to produce it, I'm certain it would make a huge profit. Why the bigwigs at Square/Enix cannot see this simple truth is one of the great mysteries of the videogame business world.

Kids. freaking 9 year olds want those consoles cuz if you think kids want a DS to play Cooking Momma you need to pull that fat head out of your loose ass.

And here's a NEWS FLASH for all you fuck3rs... Chrono Trigger on the DS actually sold pretty good. It has sold 880,000 units and will eventually sell a million in no time. Pretty good for a port (the original on the SNES sold 2.5 million units)

    Kain2311 | June 7, 2009

In my honest opinion they should create another Chrono game (not another BS Port). Fans want to play something new and fresh jumping into another adventure with compelling characters and a new story to be told. However, it is a business and it must be understood that they like all companies are going to go for the money makers. Mind you, CT and CC sold well, but it all comes down to whether they forsee money being made on a franchise so old with recent sales floundering. Now, the recent sales to me are because this is a game over ten years old, and it has been ported every which way possible. People are tired of seeinng another re-hash of a great game with a small add-on. All we can do is wait and see what happens.

They won't convince me to buy a game for a system i don't own. If they released a game of the Calibur of what Crimson Echoes was going to be, then yes, I would not only buy the game for 40 dollars , I'd also instantly go out and buy whatever system I needed to play it and call in sick for a month , possibly lose my job, but play until 4 in the morning every night.

Yeah, I love how sad that is.

I'm sorry SE, I refuse to buy the same game over and over, who do you think you are, Pink Floyd?(releasing the same album every year as a remaster and try to get more $ :P )

WE WANT TO KN OW WHAT HAPPENED BETWEEN TRIGGER AND CROSS!! WHAT HAPPENED TO MAGUS/SCHALA??

and most importantly, if you DO make a new game ... for the love of god, DO NOT MAKE AS MANY USELESS CHARACTERS THAT HAVE NOOOOOTTTHHHINNGGG TO DO WITH THE PLOT, INSTEAD OF DEVELOPING THE ONES THAT MATTER?!?! PLEASE PLEASE.

Sorry to rant there, but I really had to make sure I got that out there.

  45. Untitled
    Anonymous | June 7, 2009

There were 2 main reasons I didn't buy CT DS. The first one being that I have the SNES game and this DS version is basically just a port of the SNES game with a little extra content added in, sorry but I'm not the type of person that will shell out $$$ for the exact same game over and over again with only a little extra content added to each new iteration.
Secondly, a game that is held in such high regard by many people as CT does not belong on a handheld. Handhelds might be a little more convenient and all but it doesn't remotely compare to the big screen experience. Get off the damn handhelds SE.

Make the original SNES game available for download on various platforms and work on a new iteration that will be released on all the big screen consoles, this exclusive shit to a specific platform needs to stop.
Sometimes I wonder why I even bother anymore, these business execs are about the dumbest human beings on the face of the earth, they only see one thing and that is $$$ but they refuse to listen to input from consumers. They think they know what they are doing and the rest of us who try to offer suggestions are just idiots.

  50. Oh boy! Another opinion! Let's complain!
    Another fan | June 6, 2009

Seriously, I liked it but then again I know I'm the kind of fan that'll like anything Chrono.
If one expects to get good sales they need to put in a decent amount of work on the game, otherwise of course it won't be bought!
Another reason it probably didn't do good was because of the leak. Too many people nowadays won't bother to get it on the DS since they got the leak so "Hey! I have the game for free! Why bother buying it now?"
As for PS3 and XBOX mature thing, Chrono isn't necessarily a mature game so why would there be a difference if the game was put on one of those? While I'm at it, people complain the Wii doesn't have enough good games(and then said people recommend everything must be made for 360 and PS3 lessening Wii's chances at good games) so let's kill 2 birds with one stone: Why not make a NEW Chrono game(or a decent remake)for the Wii?
Honestly, I'd be glad if Chrono got bought out by another company. I'd be willing to buy a system for Chrono alone. Almsot anyone would. So why is it that they don't treat Chrono fairly? Other companies screw up and anger their fans and they are more than willing to apologize to their fans and make it up to them. Now why can't Square Enix do the same?

Yeah, how come the 2nd port of a 16-bit game on the DS didn't sell better? There was even an early ROM leak! They tacked on a hurried monster fighting mini-game with nigh no relevence! And a couple ugly new dungeons! How could it NOT sell tremendously? Oh what's that? They keep screwing over the Chrono community with half-hearted ports of ONLY the original game? Nice. 3D remake is where they should have gone. NEW GAME is where they should have gone...Hell, an enhanced port of Chrono Cross would be nice even. Seems odd for the most respected RPG outside of Japan has been getting the cold shoulder from everyone but the fans all these years...PEOPLE ASK BECAUSE WE CARE MOTHER ****ER~!!

I have an XBOX, and I still have a DS, (and I can drink in a bar too! ) its a wonderful tool with a pass through card, lets me wardrive, listen to music, watch video, run linux, and control my desktop via homebrew, and does all this for about 150 dollars, so I cant complain. While a great deal of the DS installed base is a younger audience, just as it was for the Game Boy, there is a pretty active homebrew development community that have rung alot of use out of those 2 arm processors and touch screen.
However, Square is using a faulty metric to decide upon a CT sequel though, by expecting DS sales to justify the production. Charging 40 dollars for a cart of a game that was released 14 years ago is obscene, the production costs for the game were amortized several times over while more than half of the installed base of the device was less than a twinkle in the eye of their parents, and besides obscene, dumb since most of the people who love the game play it on an emulator because, and here's the funny part, the Original SNES cart of the game sells for about 70 on the secondary market (I know square doesn't get a dime of that, but they should be able to smell the blood in the water when it comes to fan interest, well with that and all the fan projects they )C and D. So most fans of the game play it on their PC due to the rarity and expense of the original, hardcore purists still drag out their decades old SNES, and anyone in the middle who likes the game probably has it from the FF/CT playstation release, which is still cheaper and easier to find than the original cart. If they released new Chrono IP on ANY platform, it would grow wings right quick, and so would the machine it was being released on. The other disgrace of the ordeal was sending the Cease and Desist on the fan rom modification when it was 98% done, so some of the most serious hardcore fans of the game wasted years of their life digging through hex code. They could have at least given them a heads up in 2005 so they could have put their talents to better use.

As for the article, I agree with the NORMAL reactions. I've had it up to here with people defending this messed up company. Even Nintendo gets a clue when the fans are angry, but SquareEnix doesn't give a shit.

Heck I haven't bought from them since FFX either. Final Fantasy can go die already.

Sales failed because it was the exact same game, and it wasn't even multi-platform. If it had at least a FFIV treatment, then the difference would've been evident.

  60. Is This Call of Duty? No. So EPIC FAIL.

If this game is not Call of Duty, then it already is an EPIC FAIL.

You are a classic moron! This industry is about making money. And none of your precious gaming hardware or software would even EXIST, if there was no money to be made. Do you really think that companies should spend millions to make a game that no one buys?!?! Just because you like the game. And what was your response? "....Like hell I'm buying anything from you..." YOU DON"T BUY ANYTHING AS IT IS NOW! Your threat has absolutely ZERO weight behind it, my friend. His whole point was that you people are NOT buying it now. Do you not see the stupidity of your actions and comments.

Let me give you a clue, the DS is for children. Little whiny kids, whose parents want to put a pacifier in their mouths to shut them up on the long trip to Grandma's house. But they use a DS instead, since they are told old for a pacifier anymore, so it's the same effect.

    Some advice for you:

    1) Grow up.
    2) Get a life.
    3) Buy a PS3 or XBOX 360.

  65. It's over, Squeenix!
    Anon The Czar | June 6, 2009

You persecute your fans deliberately by C&Ding fanmade projects claiming they're copyright infringements rather than tributes! Like hell I'm buying anything from you or anything associated with you! I hope your business burns into the ground figuratively and literally!

  68. damn execs are dumb
    jpaul | June 6, 2009

they expect an rpg like chrono trigger to sell on a system where 80% own pokemon and havn't hit puberty yet, genius. the same happened to chinatown wars, and they don't think, that gta sold more on psp despite ds to psp ratio being 10000:1. Fact is the DS is a kids toy and a casual system for older people that likely only bought it for the hype and it's now collecting dust.

And somehow the sales for Front Mission told them otherwise?

Why would people buy a port of the orginal, people want a new Crono Trigger game, not one which is over 10 years old now
