FFXII Developer Now Working With Wii

Posted on September 16, 2006 by RPG Site Staff

Lost amongst the sheer torrent of news revealed in Nintendo's press conference in Tokyo on Thursday, was the news that Yasumi Matsuno - developer of FFXII (until he left the team halfway through), Vagrant Story and FF Tactics - loves the Wii and has decided to develop for the machine.

Matsuno had this to say about the Wii:

"The Wii controller makes total sense when you think about FPS-like games, but my question was, will the controls fit other existing games? However, when I first tried Mario Galaxy, I realized that the controller fit the game almost scarily well. It allows you to intuitively feel the game and its atmosphere.

He also commented on the state of games today, agree with Nintendo's policy of gameplay over graphics:

"Graphics have evolved, and there are many games claiming that this generates a more realistic atmosphere. However, there are very few games that have a control interface that lives up to this atmosphere. With the Wii controller you can actually feel like you're touching or living in this atmosphere."

The development team that Matsuno is working with hasn't been revealed, however, the prospect of the former Square-Enix employee making games for the Wii is a very promising one indeed.
