RPGs of 2017: Every RPG this year and their release dates

2017 is already a far more impressive-looking year than 2016 was (in many respects, and we hope it stays that way). Many important titles have either been announced for the new year or slipped into it for one reason or another. That includes both high-profile releases like Horizon Zero Dawn and Persona 5 to smaller but still important titles like Nier Automata and Nioh - with everything in between. Whatever type of fan you are for this genre, there's a lot to get excited about. Even better is the launch of a brand new console with the Nintendo Switch and all the hype that surrounds it.

We plan on keeping this list updated as new RPGs, adventure games, and other relevant titles we sometimes cover are announced along with their release dates. Unlike prior years, we're going to keep this a little short and sweet so you can use this as a handy reference guide without having to go through tons of pages of content just to find the game you are looking for.

Every game here is slated to be released sometime in 2017 for consoles and PC. It's still too early for some of the later games, so everything out this summer and later, or big unknowns, are going to be lumped together until further notice. We’re also only listing North American and European dates, so you’ll have to look up the other territories.

We'd love to hear what you're looking forward to, so feel free to post in the comments below on what you are enthusiastic for. Now, on to the games!

January 2017 RPGs

The beginning of the year will be setting the pace for the rest of 2017, and thankfully it starts off very strong with the anticipated releases of Tales of Berseria and Yakuza 0. It's a wonderful bookend that we as a site can certainly get behind. This will start a flood of titles from the gaming industry as a whole, so it's wonderful to see the genre we cover get so much love during a time of year that previously was dead in the water.

February 2017 RPGs

The fun doesn't stop as the exciting Quarter continues. February is a particularly strong month for Koei Tecmo. Not only do will they finally be bringing the Atelier series to Steam with the release of Atelier Sophie, but Nioh is shaping up to be one of the best action RPGs in years (at least, from this author's perspective having loved the alpha and beta). We also have the hotly anticipated Horizon Zero Dawn to look forward to, along with a personal favorite of mine - Ys Origin.

  • Fire Emblem Heroes (iOS/Android) - February 2

  • Nights of Azure (PC) – February 7 (NA/EU)

  • Atelier Sophie: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Book (PC) – February 7 (NA/EU)

  • Nioh (PS4) – February 7 (NA), February 8 (EU)

  • Fairy Fencer F: Advent Dark Force (PC) - February 14

  • Berserk and the Band of the Hawk (PS4/Vita/PC) - February 21 (NA), February 24 (EU)

  • Ys Origin (PS4) - February 21 (NA)

  • Night in the Woods (PS4/PC) - February 21 (NA/EU)

  • Horizon Zero Dawn (PS4) - February 28 (NA), March 1 (EU)

  • Story of Seasons: Trio of Towns (3DS) - February 28 (NA)

  • Torment: Tides of Numenera (PS4/Xbox One/PC) - February 28 (NA/EU)

March 2017 RPGs

March may go down as the biggest month of the entire year. Nier Automata and Mass Effect: Andromeda will take the crown as the most exciting games here, though it could have some strong competition. Nintendo is expected to release their console/portable gaming hybrid, the Switch, sometime this month. And if all the rumors are true, it could have one hell of a launch line-up. The company has a lot to prove to consumers after the Wii U, so they're going to need to hit this one out of the park.

Early 2017 RPGs

Unless any other games decide to slip into later months, the early part of the year will be just as strong as the confirmed month-by-month games will be. Once these games have a firm date, we'll be sure to update the list to keep you guys and gals informed. For now, here are the games that are set for "Early 2017" or "Q1".

  • Fault Milestone One (PS4/Vita)

  • Root Double: Before Crime After Days Xtend Edition (Vita)

April 2017 RPGs

Will this be the moment where we can see Persona 5 released to the Western world? That's up to Atlus. The game has already been a massive success in the eyes of Japan and some of us on staff. We can only hope the localization is just as strong as Persona 4's. Square Enix also continues their commitment to make the Dragon Quest series bigger in the west with the release of Dragon Quest Heroes II. Cross our fingers that Dragon Quest XI gets a near-simultaneous release in the west!

  • Persona 5 (PS4) - April 4 (NA/EU)

  • Cosmic Star Heroine (PS4/Vita/PC) - April 11

  • The Silver Case (PS4) – April 18 (NA), April 21 (EU)

  • Full Throttle Remastered (PS4/Vita/PC) - April 18 (NA/EU)

  • Syberia III (PS4/Xbox One/PC) - April 21 (EU), April 25 (NA)

  • Dragon Quest Heroes II (PS4) – April 25 (NA), April 28 (EU)

  • Period Cube: Shackles of Amadeus (Vita) - April 25 (NA)

  • What Remains of Edith Finch (PS4/PC) - April 25 (NA/EU)

  • Psycho-Pass: Mandatory Happiness PC) - April 25

  • Dawn of War 3 (PC) - April 27

  • Expeditions: Vikings (PC) - April 27

May 2017 RPGs

There’s very little here right now other than a single relevant game, but expect it to grow as we move forward - especially with the Nintendo Switch announcement in March.

Spring 2017 RPGs

There's not a whole lot happening quite yet with the springtime compared to Q1, but that doesn't mean there isn't several titles to keep an eye on. Some of them are on the smaller/independent side, but if 2016 tells us anything, it's that these experiences can be just as excited as their big budget counterparts. Valkyria Revolution and Toukiden 2 are high on my personal radar.

  • Dark Rose Valkyrie (PS4)

  • Disgaea 5 Complete (Switch)

  • Elite: Dangerous (PS4)

  • Hakuouki: Kyoto Winds (Vita)

June 2017 RPGs

July 2017 RPGs

August 2017 RPGs

Summer 2017 RPGs

This is when things start to get a little hazy. There are certainly games that have been confirmed for sometime in the summer months, but just like with Spring, these titles could easily slip into the autumn.

September 2017 RPGs

Fall 2017 RPGs

  • Layton's Mystery Journey (3DS) - July 20 (NA/EU)
  • Ys VIII (PS4/Vita)

Other RPGs Scheduled for 2017

Much like the Summer 2017 list, these are games that have been confirmed to be released sometime later this calendar year. It's too early to report or even speculate on when these games will come out, and some could even get pushed back to 2018. There are also several Kickstarter projects that remain just as fluid. Regardless, here are the games set to be released in the rest of 2017. We’ll slot them into the proper months once the news breaks.
