PS2 Backwards Compatibility on PS3 should be Updatable Via Firmware

Sony have submitted another new patent that appears to be related to enabling backwards compatibility of Playstation 2 titles on the Playstation 3 console which notes that a BC update would be delivered via a Firmware Update, and not exclusively to new consoles.

The original Japanese Story on the Patent tells readers that there would be "no need for special hardware modifications on the current PS3 model" and that BC Play "will be available via an update to the firmware."

Previously Sony filed a Patent that would allow them to emulate the PS2's Emotion Engine on the PS3.

This new patent, submitted on July 30th allows them to emulate the "Graphics Synthesizer" that was on the PS2 using the PS3's Cell & RSX.

We at RPGSite hope it's true as it will help to bolster the PS3's sparse number of RPGs with the amazing PS2 back catelogue of awesome RPGs!
