Mewgenics for Nintendo Switch 2 is an excellent portable experience, but docked is a bit lacking versus PS5

Mewgenics is coming to PS5, Xbox Series, and Nintendo Switch 2 next week with a physical release due early next year. Ahead of its release, I've had a chance to play the PS5 and Nintendo Switch 2 ports to see how they control, the new Switch 2 mouse controls, PS5 controller features, and more. For some background, I've spent almost all my time with Mewgenics on Steam Deck so far as I covered in my article and I still think it is one of the best games of 2026.

I want to do a full comparison, hopefully covering the Xbox version as well, with any potential patches for PC this month, but I wanted to focus on the Switch 2 and PS5 port features today in this early impressions article. If anything changes leading up to or at launch and when I get deeper into the game on both platforms, I will update this.

Mewgenics PS5 and Switch 2 controls

Mewgenics on PS5 has two control options in the game settings menu: Console and an original setting which matches how the PC version plays with a control. The new Console option restricts the cursor movement to just the actions and other UI options rather than letting you move it all over the screen like a virtual mouse. You can always enable that option, but this works a lot better for playing on console. The PS5 controller's touchpad can be used as a trackpad for precision movement as well.

The current Switch 2 build doesn't have this new Console control option (shown in the image below), but it benefits from having access to a touchscreen for portable play that works well alongside the button controls. Mewgenics also has mouse controls using the Joy-Con 2 controllers. This is a good option for docked play. When playing handheld, I stuck to traditional button and touch controls.

If you have already played Mewgenics on Steam and got used to the controller support on PC, you will feel right at home with Mewgenics on console, but don't expect a massive change in how it controls right now. I do hope the Console control option is brought over to Switch 2 for playing docked since I do not enjoy using mouse controls.

Mewgenics PS5 and Switch 2 visuals

Mewgenics uses a combination of animated 2D sprites, 2D menus, and more on top of static art. The static art itself looks fine on everything, but the UI and sprites benefit a lot from higher resolutions and anti-aliasing. It is a lot like how Hades and Silksong handle environments. In Mewgenics, the cats, UI, and text boxes look a lot nicer with MSAA on PC, and even on PS5. The PC version only has MSAA as an anti-aliasing option.

The current Switch 2 build has no anti-aliasing so there are a lot of jagged edges. While you might think resolution doesn't matter in a game with this aesthetic, it is very noticeable if you play at 1440p or 4K. Mewgenics in its current state on Switch 2 appears to just run the same both docked and handheld. Hopefully this can be improved in patches to match the PS5 version or just offer a resolution boost in some form when played docked.

When playing handheld, this is less noticeable, but when I played it side by side with the PC version on even Steam Deck and ROG Ally. Mewgenics on my PC handhelds looked better with MSAA while also running at a higher frame rate (90fps on OLED and 120fps on ROG Ally). Again, I want to stress that this isn't a dealbreaker, but it is something I hope gets fixed. If you, like me, were going to focus on Mewgenics handheld on Switch 2, there is nothing really to complain about based on my time with the opening hours.

Note: For the comparisons above, I used 4K capture from the Switch 2 version docked and the PS5 version. I then cropped sections of the image to show the visual difference.

Mewgenics PS5 and Switch 2 load times compared to PC and Steam Deck

Mewgenics takes about the same time to load within a game with all platforms I tested loading a battle map in two seconds or maximum three seconds in the case of the AYN Thor. The only long load is the initial one from the dashboard to the game's title screen. I tested Mewgenics with it installed to the internal storage on Switch 2, PS5 Pro, PS5, Steam Deck, ROG Ally, and AYN Thor. The results below are in seconds.

Platform Dashboard to title screen
Switch 2 11-12
Steam Deck 18-20
ROG Ally 15-16
PS5 13-14
PS5 Pro 12-13
AYN Thor 26

As you can see, the Switch 2 version loads faster than everything else I tested Mewgenics on so far. In-game the Switch 2 is a bit slower than PS5, with it being just over 2 seconds while PS5 was below 2 seconds for the tests I did. I will do more testing and add Xbox when I can in the future for my comparison. Right now, I'm more than pleased with the Switch 2 version.

In its current state, Mewgenics is already very solid on Switch 2. It is definitely my favorite portable version with how fast it loads overall and thanks to the touchscreen, but I hope to see the docked experience improve. As for PS5, it plays fantastic without any issues right now. The new "Console" control option is also great, and I hope to see it brought over to other platforms.

Note that I will be testing the cross save feature in my full comparison when it is available.

Mewgenics launches on September 8 for PS5, Xbox Series, and Nintendo Switch 2. It is currently available on PC (Steam).
