Which is the best version of Mewgenics? PC, Switch 2, Steam Deck, PS5, ROG Ally, and PS5 Pro tested

Which is the best version of Mewgenics? PC, Switch 2, Steam Deck, PS5, ROG Ally, and PS5 Pro tested

After my initial impressions with Mewgenics on both PS5 and Switch 2, I've been testing it on more devices and the day one patch for Switch 2 has also since gone live. This patch includes cross save via Steam Cloud and visual improvements. With it launching this week digitally on consoles following a patch that went live on PC a few days ago, I tested the Steam, PS5, and Switch 2 versions of Mewgenics across devices to help find the best version(s) for you. I say version(s) because Mewgenics, like Isaac, is a game you can literally spend hundreds of hours with. Cross save helps a lot here and I will also recommend more than 1 platform for specific use cases here.

Mewgenics launched on PC in February this year with the console launch set for this week digitally. It is also getting a physical release on PS5 and Nintendo Switch 2 in Q1 2027. I imagine those physical releases will arrive with all patches included, but ahead of that, Mewgenics' digital release is here for all current consoles. Having played a lot of it already through the Steam version on Steam Deck and ROG Ally, I've been revisiting that across more devices like the AYN Thor and also have the PS5 version installed on both PS5 and PS5 Pro. The version I was most interested in is the Switch 2 port given how much time I put into The Binding of Isaac on Switch 1. This comparison feature is going to cover controls, features, visuals, performance, load times, and more. Note that I don't have access to the Xbox Series version so I cannot include any details for that port yet. When I get it, I will update this article.

Mewgenics features across PS5, Switch 2, and Steam.

Mewgenics on Steam has been designed for mouse and keyboard input. It has controller support, but it still isn't as good as it should be. If you've played any tactical RPG on PC with a controller in recent years, Mewgenics' controller support will take a bit to get used to. On PS5 and Switch 2, a new "Console" control option is available and it is exactly what I hope to see added to PC.

In fact, Nicalis went above and beyond for the console ports by adding full touch support on Switch 2, Joy-Con 2 mouse controls, and also DualSense touch pad support on PS5. While I don't think the touch pad works as well as a proper mouse, the good news is that all three console versions are supposed to also support keyboard and mouse input. The Switch 2 version also has an option to disable the touchscreen if you don't want it, but I found a combination of both buttons and touch controls to be the best way to play Mewgenics on the go, and it became my favorite handheld version by far after dozens of hours.

Mewgenics cross save on PS5, Switch 2, Xbox Series, and Steam

Mewgenics supports cross save via linking to Steam account. I can't actually verify how this works if you only play on consoles and not Steam, but I was able to get my Steam save over (it has to be done for each of the three save slots) and continue playing on Switch 2, PS5, Steam Deck, AYN Thor, and ROG Ally. It works well, but I did run into Steven (Isaac, The End is Nigh) while testing this out a few times. This was my fault to be clear, but it was funny running into it as I kept quitting and testing save syncing.

The only thing I'd like to see addressed here is having the save files auto-uploaded or adding an option to automatically upload and download like in Hades II on Switch 1/2. I don't know if this is because I've been testing cross save pre-release, but it is the only issue I have with Mewgenics on console right now.

Mewgenics visuals across PS5, Switch 2, Steam Deck, ROG Ally, and AYN Thor

I covered my issues with Mewgenics on Switch 2 docked before the day one patch in last week's early impressions article. Those visual issues have been resolved and Mewgenics looks great on every device I own now. It even holds up great via GameNative on the AYN Thor top screen. I have zero complaints with Mewgenics' visuals now and I've included some comparison images below covering PS5 and Switch 2 docked.

Given the aesthetic and how much of the gameplay uses 2D assets as opposed to the rendered UI and other sprites, this isn't an issue, but the PS5 version does look the best on a 4K display. When playing on my 1440p monitor, I really had to look very closely to notice differences on certain elements. Obviously I could tell when I did my capture to compare, but this is one of those situations where you might not notice on your actual TV. If you're curious about the portable experience, the gallery below covers Switch 2 handheld, ROG Ally, and Steam Deck.

Note: For the comparison images above, I used Steam's screenshot functionality on Steam Deck and ROG Ally. For Switch 2, I used the system capture. I cropped the same part of each image with Steam Deck resized to align and all versions basically run at the device's native resolution and look great on each screen.

Mewgenics performance across PS5, Switch 2, Steam Deck, ROG Ally, and AYN Thor

With the day one patch, my major visual complaints with Mewgenics on Switch 2 have been resolved. As for performance, my experience has been a bit different when playing handheld or docked and depending on the control option. When handheld, Mewgenics appears to run uncapped handheld so cursor movement (using classic controls) in the main menu and save selection screen feel a bit sluggish, but the actual gameplay in each stage and the maps feels good. Even a crowded base area runs fine so far. If you use "Console" controls and the d-pad, this will not bother you.

Mewgenics on Switch 2 doesn't target 90 or 120fps like PC handhelds, but it never feels bad when playing handheld. I've put in dozens of hours with Mewgenics across multiple handhelds including the Switch 2 and it has been a joy to play on all of them including the AYN Thor as I'll cover below.

When it comes to docked performance, Mewgenics has no trouble on Switch 2. I even tested mouse controls using the Joy-Con 2 controllers and they were responsive across the board. For a launch version with the day one patch, Mewgenics on Switch 2 exceeded all my expectations so far. I already loved how Mewgenics was on PS5, but this is one of the rare cases where a day one or launch patch actually delivered in spades for Switch 2. There isn't anything to note with performance on PS5 or PS5 Pro. Mewgenics runs perfectly on both consoles.

On AYN Thor with GameNative, I first had a lot of performance issues with Mewgenics. This is when I discovered the GameNative's frame rate limit causes issues in Mewgenics. Once I removed the limit, it ran a lot better. If you use anti-aliasing (2x) and play at 1080p, it can drop below 60fps, but it never gets too bad. If you disable anti-aliasing and reduce the render scale a bit when playing at 1080p, you will never see drops below 60fps. It also holds up visually on the top screen of the AYN Thor.

Moving over to the ROG Ally, Mewgenics never drops below 60fps at 1080p with MSAA set to 2x. I wouldn't push this setting higher because it isn't really needed on the smaller screen. I left the game uncapped and the VRR screen helped a lot with Mewgenics feeling the best of all handhelds on ROG Ally at 1080p. On Steam Deck, Mewgenics also looks and runs perfectly at 720p with a 90fps or 60fps target. If you use MSAA set to 2x, expect dips below 90fps, but it never dropped below 60fps in my testing.

Mewgenics in its current state is a super-polished experience on Steam, Switch 2, and PS5. I will update this with Xbox impressions when I get that version.

Which is the best version of Mewgenics?

As far as I'm concerned, the Switch 2 version is the best overall release since you get multiple control options including the new "Console" setting, the best portable version, and it has no missing features. It also has cross save so you can bring over your PC save. If you, like me, value the hybrid nature of the Switch 2 and want a solid version through and through, this is it. Don't consider the others if you want a single version of Mewgenics. As much as I love how much smoother it feels on Steam Deck OLED and ROG Ally, the controls on Switch 2 are a lot better right now alongside the ability to get a seamless docked experience. If the "Console" control option is added to the PC release, I will revisit this section. Until then, the Switch 2 version is the best overall.

If you only value playing on TV and don't care about portability, the PS5 version is the best when it comes to visuals, but the difference isn't big enough to miss out on handheld play for me. The PS5 version also has keyboard and mouse support with DualSense touch pad support, but that isn't as convenient or as good as the Switch 2 Joy-Con 2 mouse controls. Once the "Console" control option is added to Steam, that version will likely be my favorite, but as someone who prefers playing with a controller, the "Console" control option is the way to go.

Which version of Mewgenics should you buy?

Everyone has their own priorities for what they want, so I'm going to list the advantages and disadvantages of every single version of Mewgenics as a conclusion to this feature below:

  • Mewgenics on Switch 2: This is the version to buy if you want to play on a single platform. The Switch 2 port of Mewgenics gives you the best portable version right now, a solid TV experience, great touchscreen controls, and you also have the option to sync with Steam whenever you need. This is also getting a physical release with the game on cart.
  • Mewgenics on PS5: Mewgenics on PS5 is also getting a physical release and it makes good use of the DualSense controller touch pad for precision cursor movement. Beyond that, it has trophy support and activity card tracking. It also supports remote play, but you can't use the touchscreen like you can on Switch 2.
  • Mewgenics on Xbox Series: I will update this when I get access to that version.
  • Mewgenics on Steam: Mewgenics on Steam is the best version to get if you don't care about full controller support. It also likely will get updates well before the console versions and it runs flawlessly even on lower end systems and handhelds.
  • Mewgenics on Steam and a console: This is the actual combination to get if you play on multiple platforms and can justify the cost. Mewgenics is a game you will likely put tons of time into all year. With Steam Cloud sync support, you could play on your PC and then pick up your save on Switch 2 as the best handheld version. This is also for those who played Mewgenics at launch earlier this year and now want to continue playing on a console or grab a physical release later.

Hopefully this helped you decide where you should get Mewgenics with its new console ports, and if you already own it, got you to finally play or revisit it because it is one of Edmund and Tyler's best games, and easily my favorite port from Nicalis in years. I can't wait to see how the upcoming Isaac port on PS5 and Switch 2 feels with the potential of cross save.

Mewgenics is now available on PS5, Xbox Series, Switch 2, and PC (Steam).
