The RPGs of 2017: Every RPG to be released this year and their dates

2017 is already a far more impressive-looking year than 2016 was (in many respects, and we hope it stays that way). Many important titles have either been announced for the new year or slipped into it for one reason or another. That includes both high-profile releases like Horizon Zero Dawn and Persona 5 to smaller but still important titles like Nier Automata and Nioh - with everything in between. Whatever type of fan you are for this genre, there's a lot to get excited about. Even better is the launch of a brand new console with the Nintendo Switch and all the hype that surrounds it.

We plan on keeping this list updated as new RPGs, adventure games, and other relevant titles we sometimes cover are announced along with their release dates. Unlike prior years, we're going to keep this a little short and sweet so you can use this as a handy reference guide without having to go through tons of pages of content just to find the game you are looking for.

Every game here is slated to be releathesed sometime in 2017 for consoles and PC. It's still too early for some of the later games, so everything out this summer and later, or big unknowns, are going to be lumped together until further notice. We’re also only listing North American and European dates, so you’ll have to look up the other territories.

We'd love to hear what you're looking forward to, so feel free to post in the comments below on what you are enthusiastic for. Now, on to the games!

January 2017 RPGs

The beginning of the year will be setting the pace for the rest of 2017, and thankfully it starts off very strong with the anticipated releases of Tales of Berseria and Yakuza 0. It's a wonderful bookend that we as a site can certainly get behind. This will start a flood of titles from the gaming industry as a whole, so it's wonderful to see the genre we cover get so much love during a time of year that previously was dead in the water.

February 2017 RPGs

upcoming2017-2.png

The fun doesn't stop as the exciting Quarter continues. February is a particularly strong month for Koei Tecmo. Not only do will they finally be bringing the Atelier series to Steam with the release of Atelier Sophie, but Nioh is shaping up to be one of the best action RPGs in years (at least, from this author's perspective having loved the alpha and beta). We also have the hotly anticipated Horizon Zero Dawn to look forward to, along with a personal favorite of mine - Ys Origin.

  • Fire Emblem Heroes (iOS/Android) - February 2

  • Nights of Azure (PC) – February 7 (NA/EU)

March 2017 RPGs

upcoming2017-3.png

March may go down as the biggest month of the entire year. Nier Automata and Mass Effect: Andromeda will take the crown as the most exciting games here, though it could have some strong competition. Nintendo is expected to release their console/portable gaming hybrid, the Switch, sometime this month. And if all the rumors are true, it could have one hell of a launch line-up. The company has a lot to prove to consumers after the Wii U, so they're going to need to hit this one out of the park.

April 2017 RPGs

upcoming2017-5.png

Will this be the moment where we can see Persona 5 released to the Western world? That's up to Atlus. The game has already been a massive success in the eyes of Japan and some of us on staff. We can only hope the localization is just as strong as Persona 4's. Square Enix also continues their commitment to make the Dragon Quest series bigger in the west with the release of Dragon Quest Heroes II. Cross our fingers that Dragon Quest XI gets a near-simultaneous release in the west!

  • Persona 5 (PS4) - April 4 (NA/EU)

  • Cosmic Star Heroine (PS4/Vita/PC) - April 11

  • The Silver Case (PS4) – April 18 (NA), April 21 (EU)
