Final Fantasy XV Regalia Type D: How to get the Regalia Type-D off-road monster truck car upgrade

Square Enix keep on updating Final Fantasy XV, and it's not with the stuff that you'd typically expect. I mean, sure, there are patch updates to fix bugs and tweak balance, but the team behind the game also keeps on updating beyond that - including story updates and all-new features. One such brand new feature added well after launch is the Regalia Type-D, an all-new form of FF15's iconic car that lets you drive it off-road.

The Regalia Type-D was added in update version 1.12 way back in mid-2017, but it's now being rediscovered by a whole new audience thanks to FF15 Royal Edition and FF15 Windows Edition on PC.

The new Regalia Type-D goes along with the flying Regalia Type-F as an exciting new form of transport for Noctis and the boys - and unlike the Type-F, the off-road friendly Type-D is available from fairly early on. But how do you get it? Allow us to assist...

Final Fantasy XV's Regalia Type-D: How to get the off-road car in update 1.12

Well, first thing's first - you're going to need to get the correct update. You don't require any of the DLC or the season pass to access the Type-D, but you will need to make sure that your version of FF15 is version 1.12 - versions from this number and up should include the Episode Prompto DLC files which you may or may not use, but it also includes the Regalia Type-D files. If you've just picked up Royal Edition or Windows Edition, these updates should be included.

You can grab the Regalia Type-D quite early on - as soon as you have relatively free access to the open world of Lucis in Chapter 3 you can get this major upgrade to your car.

Simply visit Cindy in Hammerhead (or if you're later in the game when she moves briefly, at whatever location she's at instead) and chat to her. There you'll be given a few options after a bit of idle chatter, and one of them will be to Change to the Regalia Type-D.

Hit this and after a fade to black and the like you'll find a massive monster truck waiting for you. It's pretty bad ass, to be honest.

Why the Regalia Type-D is worth driving around

The Regalia Type-D actually adds quite a lot to FF15, with its massive size giving you a new and different advantage in gameplay.

Once you get out of populated areas, you'll be able to steer the Regalia Type-D off road into the wilderness - the invisible walls are gone! Hit Circle/B and the massive monster car will actually jump, which you can either use to get over things or simply to perform sick tricks. It can drive through water, but not very deep water.

If you smash into enemies the large size of the car will knock over and even kill weaker ones, though stronger or larger enemies might stop the Type-D in its tracks. You aren't rewarded EXP for car kills.

Keep an eye on your fuel gauge - the Regalia Type-D can't be pushed, so you'll have to pay for a tow if you run out of fuel.

That's it! Remember that we have plenty of amazing FF15 guide pages on various areas of the game if you're feeling a bit lost as to what to do with your newfound freedom. Square Enix apparently has big plans for FF15, with major announcements about the game to come in August.
