Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Materia guide: Full Materia List & Unlock Locations

The Materia system is back in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, continuing to use and ever so slightly evolve this classic system that made its debut all the way back in the original FF7, 25 years ago. There's more types of Materia than ever in FF7 Rebirth - and this page is here to help you get your head around all of the options, listing all materia in FF7 Rebirth, plus how you can acquire multiple copies of every materia.

How Materia Works in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth

There's more Materia in FF7 Rebirth than ever before - and this full Materia List tells you every one in the game, plus where to get multiple copies of each.

If you've played any other entry in the Final Fantasy VII series, you'll likely be familiar with Materia. Even if you are entirely new to FF7 Rebirth, it's a relatively easy concept to understand. In short, Materia is equipment that when used enhances a character's abilities for combat, either by unlocking new abilities and magic spells or by augmenting and improving their stats. Acquiring new Materia and improving existing Materia is a key progression mechanic in FF7 Rebirth.

Materia sets itself apart from many similar mechanics in how it's equipped. Rather than being equipped directly, it is 'slotted' into your other gear. The amount of nature of slots varies across gear, which means Materia should be a major consideration for you when trying to figure out the Best Weapon or Armor for each character in each play-style. Essentially, these systems mesh together.

Materia typically has multiple skills or levels of power associated with it. If you equip the Fire Materia, for instance, this unlocks the 'Fire' spell - but the more you battle with a particular Materia equipped the better it becomes, gaining Ability Points (AP) for each enemy defeated while it is equipped. Over time, that Fire Materia will unlock higher-level spells for use, Fira and Firaga. You can swap leveled up materia between party members, but you always need to have the Materia equipped to use its abilities - you can never permanently 'learn' Materia skills.

Materia in FF7 Rebirth is split into five color-coded categories:

  • Magic Materia gives you access to offensive and defensive spells, and is Green.
  • Support Materia exists to power up and increase the potency of other materia, and is Blue.
  • Command Materia unlocks new non-magic abilities for characters to use, and is Yellow.
  • Independent Materia doesn't fit any other category, but is typically related to improving character stats and parameters. These are Purple.
  • Summon Materia lets you bring great godly beasts to your side in battle, and are Red.

Below, we list all Materia in all five of these categories, plus where in FF7 Rebirth you can find copies of each.

Magic Materia

Magic Materia is the method to unlock spells of the offensive or defensive variety in FF7 Rebirth

The green-tinted Magic Materia is exactly what you'd expect - how you'll unlock the various magical spells available in FF7 Remake. These will let you damage, heal, buff, debuff, brutalize with status effects, and beyond. The more you level up magic materia, the more spells you'll unlock when they're equipped. Here's every Magic Materia in the game.

Support Materia is useless alone, but paired with Magic Materia, it can prove to be some of the best in the game.

Support Materia has an appropriate name, as it exists to 'support' another equipped materia. It must be equipped into a double materia slot where two slots are directly connected - a consistent design element across the FF7 series that comes over to FF7 Rebirth. When equipped that way, the Support Materia's effect will take place when the materia it is supporting is used.

The Yellow-colored Command Materia is similar to Magic Materia in that it unlocks new skills you can deploy in battle, but instead of being magic, these are physical abilities that get added to the 'Abilities' menu alongside things like your weapon skills. Many of them are very useful - must-haves, in fact.

      Chakra
