The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales - How to use the Cat Needle

One of the collectable items in The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales are cats, of which there are 50 in the game. We even have a page detailing where to find every cat in The Adventures of Elliot.

Partway through the Age of Reconstruction storyline, you'll earn the ability to collect cats from around the world. The cat-eared Ailurophilic Traveler will even reward you for finding cats with a variety of items. In fact, the first item you can earn from him is the Cat Needle, which has the following description:

A magic artifact for locating cats. Senses their presence and points to their whereabouts.

Having an in-game item to point out the location and number of cats as a collectable would be incredibly convenient. However, what is not quite clear is how you actually use this item when you get it. If you are on this page, you are probably wondering the same thing.

The short answer is that you cannot use the Cat Needle yet. You need the Magic Compass that it goes to first, before the Cat Needle becomes active. You earn the Magic Compass as part of the story progression in the Age of Magic, a bit later in the game. It's somewhat confusing that the game allows you to easily obtain the Cat Needle before getting the Magic Compass, before it can actually be used.

Regardless, once you do get both the Cat Needle and the Magic Compass, not only will Cat icons appear on your map and mini-map, but a Cat counter also appears above dungeon areas, right next to the similar counter for unopened treasure chests. This makes seeking and finding the rest of the cats a cinch. However, note that some cats do not appear until certain quests or story progression has been cleared, so don't fret if you are missing cats and don't see an icon on the map; more cats appears with further game progress.
