Raymond starts Star Ocean: The Divine Force with his merchant vessel, the Ydas, gunned down by a Pangalactic Federation battleship known as the Astoria. His crew and him are separated as their escape pods land on an unknown, primitive planet called Aster IV. Early on, he meets The Divine Force's other protagonist, a lady named Laeticia. She is the Crown Princess of the Kingdom of Aucerius, but her kingdom is on the brink of disaster.

Players experience different, unique perspectives from events that unfold, depending on whether they choose Raymond or Laeticia as their protagonist. Raymond's point of view will witness more sci-fi elements, while Laeticia's side sees more of the fantasy elements in The Divine Force.

Other characters that join Raymond and Laeticia that were previously revealed are Albaird and Elena. New faces introduced for the first time in Star Ocean: The Divine Force are Nina Deforges and Midas Felgreed.

Combat in The Divine Force are initiated seamlessly from the field with no transition or loading screen. Up to four party members can participate in them and players can switch between them on-the-fly in the heat of battle. Actions consume AP and certain abilities will increase max AP temporarily. If a person feels that they can't keep up with what's going on in battle, they can access Stop Mode at any time to freeze combat and give them a moment to issue orders to allies, switch targets, and so forth.

Chain Combos grant players the ability to customize a party member's moveset. They can assign skills to face buttons.

People who purchase Star Ocean: The Divine Force before November 30, 2022 receive the Lionheart's Blutgang greatsword for Raymond and Flashing Naglering dual blades for Laeticia; they are both weapons that can be used early in the game. Raymond's weapon gives him increased experience gained in battle, while Laeticia's weapon reduces enemy's defense temporarily.

Those who buy the game early also receive four exclusive pawns to be used in the title's mini-game, Es'owa. They are crossover characters from two of tri-Ace's past titles, Lenneth & Lezard from Valkyrie Profile and Jack & Ridley Radiata Stories. These pawns can be equipped as accessories, as well.

A Deluxe Edition for Star Ocean: The Divine Force includes the game's Deluxe Edition Original Soundtrack, as well as a variety of packs that contain weapons, armors, and accessories.
