Many, if not most, Warhammer 40,000-based games are strategy or action titles (like the Dawn of War or Space Marine series). Owlcat Games bills Rogue Trader is the first "classic cRPG" based on Warhammer 40,000, and blends squad-based combat with character interaction and questing. Players will control a titular Rogue Trader - an independent explorer, privateer, and special agent of Warhammer 40,000's Imperium. Equipped with the sacred Warrant of Trade and a personal voidship, Rogue Traders have nearly carte blanche to advance the Imperium's interests in any way they deem necessary. These means include contacting alien races and traveling freely to places that would be forbidden to any other Imperium citizen or soldier, waging war, and making deals deemed of benefit to Mankind - though risking being judged a traitor by the Imperium's Inquisition or other authorities.

The Rogue Trader trailer details some of the characters that will join players in their adventures, which include Ulfar, a Space Marine of the Space Wolves chapter, an unsanctioned Psyker, an Aeldari Farseer, and even a servant of the Inquisition. Players will also deal with Chaos and the servants of the Ruinous Powers.

Warhammer 40,000 Rogue Trader is in development for PC and consoles (though no console platforms have been specified). It does not yet have a release date.
