New Avowed Xbox Showcase trailer unveils gameplay and setting details

During the June 2023 Xbox Games Showcase, Obsidian Entertainment's new first-person RPG Avowed received its first substantial trailer. The new trailer revealed in-development gameplay footage and shed more light on the game's story and characters. The game also has a release targeted for some time in 2024 on Xbox Series X|S and PC. It'll be a day-one release on Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass.

Check it out below:

Avowed is a new RPG set in the world of Eora, the original fantasy setting created for Obsidian's Pillars of Eternity series. Whereas Pillars of Eternity and its sequel were both isometric party-based RPGs in the vein of Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale, Avowed is a first-person RPG, closer in gameplay to titles like The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim or Obsidian's own The Outer WorldsAvowed was first announced in 2020, but no official details have been confirmed by Microsoft or Obsidian since then.

The trailer and an accompanying blog post confirmed that the game is set in the Living Lands. The Living Lands is the name of a "plagued, wild island" in Eora, teeming with wildlife and fantastical flora. The original Pillars of Eternity took place in the Dyrwood, while Pillars of Eternity II took place in Eora's Deadfire Archipelago.

The trailer also shows off more of the game's first-person combat, which involves using both weapons and spells in a natural dual-wielding pattern. The trailer is narrated by one of the player's companion characters, Kai. Kai is a Coastal Amaua and a former soldier. In the trailer and dialog shots, Kai appears to be ambivalent about the player's intentions, and wary of their power.

Avowed is in development and will release on Xbox Series X|S and PC in 2024.
