Alpha Protocol returns to PC storefronts with a modernized release on GOG

Sega, Obsidian Entertainment, and GOG have announced that 2010 espionage RPG Alpha Protocol is now available for GOG. The game will be priced at $19.99 with a 10% launch discount until April 3. The store page is here.

This news is surprising, because Alpha Protocol — which originally released for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, & PC — hasn't been available for purchase in years. According to Delisted Games, Alpha Protocol was removed from the Xbox 360 storefront in 2018, and the game's Steam version was pulled later in 2019. It was retail-only for PlayStation 3, and it never made its way to future platforms, either.

According to reporting at the time, the delisting was due to an 'expiry of music rights'. While not explicitly stated, this would undoubtedly be Autograph's "Turn up the Radio", which plays during a specific boss encounter. According to GOG's, the entirety of the soundtrack is fully licensed once again, and nothing was cut out from the original release.

GOG also states that, while seemingly not a remaster, the new PC port will include performance improvements, better compatibility with modern PC operating systems, and better controller support. Being on GOG, it will also be DRM-free, of course.

The announcement from GOG can be found below.

When we started our journey 15 years ago, one of our most important goals was to do our best to preserve games and make them last forever. Allowing video games history, once-loved gems, to be lost in time, is something we cannot just stand and watch – we fight, for current and future generations to be able to enjoy games; all games, not just the newest, popular releases. Today, we stand proudly by our mission, and we’re extremely happy to announce the re-release of a cherished classic that, thanks to our efforts, has been successfully archived in the GOG catalog, to enjoy anew.

Alpha Protocol is coming back – better than ever, DRM-free, for modern PCs!

That’s right, this Alpha Protocol, the Espionage RPG, is making a grand return 14 years after its initial premiere. With conjoined forces of GOG, Obsidian Entertainment and SEGA, we’ve made sure to make it better than ever; compatible with modern PCs, with licensed soundtrack and performance improvements that are sure to make this timeless classic, yet again, your favorite spy story.

Loyalty carries a price and no one knows this more than agent Michael Thorton. A talented young agent cast out by his government, Thorton is the only one with the information needed to stop an impending international catastrophe. To do so means he must cut himself off from the very people he is sworn to protect. As players determine how to accomplish different objectives, the decisions made and actions taken in each mission will ultimately transform the type of secret agent Michael Thorton will become. Every choice the player makes as Michael Thorton will carry consequences for his future and the fate of the world.

With Alpha Protocol back, we’re also very happy to say that the GOG version of the game contains additional or brought back features that are here to let you enjoy it even more:

  • Licensed soundtrack: Immerse yourself in the game's thrilling espionage atmosphere, accompanied by its iconic tracks.
  • Achievements support: Your accomplishments will not go unnoticed, as the achievement system (previously only available on consoles) is fully implemented on GOG.
