Elden Ring live action film in the works from Bandai Namco and A24 with director and writer Alex Garland

Bandai Namco Entertainment and FromSoftware have announced that an Elden Ring live action film is in the works.

This live action film sees Bandai Namco Entertainment and A24 team up with writer and director Alex Garland (Ex Machina, Civil War, Warfare) who will lead the project. Peter Rice with Andrew Macdonald and Allon Reich from DNA, and George R. R. Martin and Vince Gerardis will produce the film going by the announcement.

This film announcement comes soon after Elden Ring was announced for Nintendo Switch 2 as Elden Ring Tarnished Edition and also after the game hit 30 million copies sold .

Elden Ring is now available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC (Steam). It launches on Switch 2 this year as Elden Ring Tarnished Edition.

Bandai Namco Entertainment Inc. and A24 today announced their collaboration with writer and director Alex Garland for a live-action film adaptation of FromSoftware Inc.’s world-renowned video game Elden Ring.

Elden Ring was created under the guidance of FromSoftware’s Hidetaka Miyazaki, based on a mythological story written by George R. R. Martin, author of the fantasy novel series, “A Song of Ice and Fire.” 

To bring the epic world and intense action of Elden Ring to film, the project will be led by filmmaker Alex Garland (Ex Machina, Civil War, Warfare) as writer and director. The film will be produced by Peter Rice alongside Andrew Macdonald and Allon Reich from DNA, and George R. R. Martin and Vince Gerardis.

Elden Ring is an action RPG set in an authentic dark fantasy world. The game allows players to explore vast environments and dungeons to discover the unknown and enjoy the sense of accomplishment that comes from overcoming obstacles and challenges. Combining the development capabilities of FromSoftware and the marketing power of Bandai Namco Entertainment's overseas network, this title was released on February 25, 2022, and has shipped more than 30 million units worldwide.

An Elden Ring spinoff, Elden Ring Nightreign, is set for simultaneous worldwide release on Friday, May 30, 2025. The title is an action game where players co-operate to overcome a variety of challenging situations. While carrying over elements from Elden Ring, such as weapons and enemies, the game has been redesigned to provide players with a completely new gameplay experience. Players will choose from a cast of unique characters to face off against a new threat.

Elden Ring Tarnished Edition, an all-in-one version of Elden Ring for the Nintendo Switch 2, is set to release in 2025. It includes content from the DLC Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree released in June 2024 and four new armor sets and a new appearance customization feature for Torrent the Spectral Steed (3 variants) have also been added to this edition. Players can look forward to playing Elden Ring Tarnished Edition anytime, anywhere on the Nintendo Switch 2.
