Meet Respec, RPG Site’s new sibling website
If you’re a regular reader of RPG Site, we’ve got something new for you: Respec, a new website spun-off from RPG Site that wants to bring the same style of coverage we’ve built this site on to a broader variety of games and gaming-adjacent topics.
That means that at its heart, Respec is about no-nonsense in-depth coverage from experts on the topic at hand - and most importantly, that respects your intelligence. You’ll see the same sort of thing as on RPG Site over there, but covering all sorts of games - and you’ll see some of the same faces over there, too.
As well as being a sibling to RPG Site, Respec is also a continuation of some other beloved games media lineages. The site’s Editor-in-Chief is one Tom Orry, who founded Videogamer.com in 2004 and led that site through its most popular years as a fun site with a joyously anarchic streak. Tom later went on to work at Gamer Network and helped to run several of its websites including USGamer, VG247, and Eurogamer - which is where he and I crossed paths, where I was working as a part-time Editor-at-Large on the latter two sites.
Gamer Network eventually went through a few acquisitions, and is now owned by IGN Entertainment - who have their own very successful but undeniably different ideas about how games media should operate. Tom and I wanted to recapture the feeling of fast-iterating, experimental, and tonally eclectic work we did when Gamer Network was independent - which mirrors that which we’ve been able to accomplish here on RPG Site as an independent outlet. Several other ex-Gamer Network faces are joining us on this journey.
It feels even more appropriate that we’re launching Respec this year, in RPG Site’s 20th year. You’ll spy a little cheeky RPG Site shield reference in the logo, and of course the name is evocative of resetting your specialization and retooling your skill tree - which is a lot like what this venture feels like to the involved faces formerly of Gamer Network. It’s appropriate on all fronts!
To be clear, our commitment to RPG Site is absolute (and you’ll still see off-topic RPG-adjacent Branching Path articles here, and plenty of non-RPG detours on the Tetracast), but with Respec we hope to offer another great alternative to some of the other games media around.
You can now visit Respec, listen to its podcast, and if you’re feeling especially generous, support it on Patreon.
So, welcome to the family, Respec! Next up in our 20th celebrations? Major upgrades here on RPG Site. Stay tuned…
