Nekcom and 4Divinity have published a new trailer for Showa American Story at the Gamescom 2026 Opening Night Live stream. This trailer shows more of the upcoming game's story background and gameplay elements.

This trailer features Japanese voiceovers, and it also reveals the Japanese voice actors behind some of the key characters:

  • Michael Hero: Ishikawa Hideo
  • Bubba: Ohtsuka Houchu
  • Mutsuki Akitora: Midorikawa Hikaru
  • Chigusa Choko: Hikasa Yoko

Nekcom has also uploaded a standalone version of the Gamescom 2026 trailer on their own YouTube channel, and you can find it right below. The game is still slated for release on PlayStation 5 and PC, although it has still yet to have a release window after missing 2025.

Today at gamescom Opening Night Live, developer NEKCOM and publisher 4Divinity revealed a brand-new trailer for SHOWA AMERICAN STORY. In this outlandish post-apocalyptic RPG set in an alternate 1980s, Japan has bought out most of the United States, transforming it into a familiar-yet-strangely-unique backdrop to a zombie outbreak. Players will embark on an absurd pop-culture-fueled cross-country adventure when SHOWA AMERICAN STORY launches on Windows PC and PlayStation 5.

Narrated by the anime-loving President, the latest trailer for SHOWA AMERICAN STORY offers a glimpse at protagonist Chigusa Choko’s journey through California. We’re introduced to companions Michael Hero and Bubba, the mysterious Mutsuki Akitora, and various other characters and enemies that Choko encounters in the wasteland. We then transition to a short montage of recreation activities Choko can partake in (including arcade games SpaceBunny and ShowaRun) and then the needle drop moment: Choko kicking some serious ass in a fantastic spectacle of ultra violence. Bloody combos, ball-bursting takedowns, patriotic bludgeonings — OH MY!

SHOWA AMERICAN STORY follows the journey of Choko, a young woman who suddenly revives from the dead to discover a wild world filled with zombies, monsters, and an eccentric cast of human survivors — some friendly, and others downright bad. Players will travel across the United States in search of answers and discover the extent of Choko’s mysterious and frightening powers. This unique RPG features a rich arsenal of melee and ranged weaponry, with Choko able to turn a variety of objects into tools of carnage. Choko will face hordes of enemies in fast-paced real-time combat, leveraging weapon-specific attacks, dodges, counters, and executions with fluid precision. Players can freely mix and match weapons and further enhance Choko’s stats to their bloody satisfaction as they level up, while also unlocking surprising new abilities by completing a variety of mini-games.

SHOWA AMERICAN STORY blends strategic combat, comedy, exploration, and an emotionally charged narrative that shows the value of human connections.

Live life to the fullest in this post-apocalyptic world, and never stop growing.

  • Vermin to Kill: Dispatch foes using a variety of melee weapons, ranged firearms, and other strange contraptions that each have their own strengths and weaknesses. Samurai swords, a drill-arm, THE ‘MERICAN FLAG, guns galore — Choko’s arsenal is immense. Which will be your favorite?
  • Funny Games: Partake in dozens of unique mini-games and stat-boosting daily activities — from fully-playable arcade machines, hopscotch, dumbbell training, and loads more — that will evoke era-specific nostalgia. A rich selection of side-quests further flesh out the world’s characters and lore.

SHOWA AMERICAN STORY will offer players worldwide a unique cultural perspective. Its creators — including creative director XY.Luo — at NEKCOM grew up in China during the Reform and Opening-Up era of the 1980s, a fascinating historical period in which large amounts of American and Japanese popular culture entered China. The intensity of this cultural impact and fusion within a relatively short period was rare on a global scale. The concept of SHOWA AMERICAN STORY was inspired by the personal experience of its developers, applying a Japanese cultural influence on a North American setting from the perspective of Chinese creatives. NEKCOM’s strong authorial vision, which values strong creative voices and distinctive artistic perspectives, allows the studio to create games with unique identities and offer players experiences that feel personal, memorable, and highly-engaging.
