Season Three kicks off today with a spiritual sequel to a silly Playdate favorite, and a wild, technically impressive dungeon crawler with soulslike elements.
Gloom Gate
Developed by Lu Bu (Lukas Büffel)
Deep within the castle, a mystical gate was discovered, and a terrible curse poured through it into our world. But a brave knight sets out into the heart of the darkness to find the gate and break the curse. Gloom Gate is a reaction-based action RPG that combines old-school dungeon crawling with soulslike elements.
From the developer
“Gloom Gate started as an experiment in which I wanted to find out if I could develop a good workflow for a pseudo-3D game with an over-the-shoulder view of the player with an enemy in the center,” says developer Lukas Büffel. "I first tried using flat 2D sprites for the characters in a 3D arena but then switched to using 3D characters as well to have more flexibility. At the same time, I had to set up a pipeline that would allow me to export the graphics in a format suitable for the PlayDate’s 1-bit display. After that, all I had to do was build the rest of the game, which was actually the hard part. On top of that, there was the challenge of keeping everything in the Playdate’s memory. All enemies and the player have multiple animations, all of which run at 50 fps, resulting in a large number of large files. I learned a great deal from this project and am very proud of the game!”
Playdate Seasons are a series of curated game collections, developed specifically for the handheld , that release weekly onto the Playdates of Season purchasers across the globe at the same time after the start of the Season rollout. Season Three games will arrive every Thursday at Midnight PT for the four week duration of the Season.
