Horizon Zero Dawn sells 7.6 million copies worldwide in first year
Sony Interactive Entertainment announced today that Horizon Zero Dawn has sold 7.6 million copies since it launched a year ago on Playstation 4. The landmark makes it the most successful new Sony IP on the platform, though it had held that title ever since it sold nearly 3 million within a couple weeks of release. Horizon released to wide critical acclaim, including winning the Writers Guild of America's award for Outstanding Achievement in Video Game Writing. We also thought it was one of the best RPGs of 2017.
Here is the full statement from Sony Interactive boss Shawn Layden and Co-Founder of Guerilla Games, Herman Huist:
“We are incredibly grateful that Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Zero Dawn: The Frozen Wilds have been received so positively by so many gamers and it is a testament to the fantastic work of the entire team at Guerrilla. The combination of beautiful story-telling and great characters, with excellent gameplay mechanics, has resonated well with fans and led to this exceptional sales milestone,” said Shawn Layden, Chairman of SIE Worldwide Studios.
“We had huge ambition for Horizon Zero Dawn and as we approached the launch we knew people were excited, but to see sales of this volume is truly mind blowing. Since launch, millions of players have joined Aloy on a quest to discover the secrets of the old ones. We hope they enjoy playing Horizon Zero Dawn as much as we enjoyed making it,” said Hermen Hulst, Managing Director and Co-Founder, Guerrilla.
To celebrate the achievement, Sony will bundle a handful of avatars as well as a PS4 theme comprised of Photo Mode screenshots for download tomorrow on the Playstation Store. There will also be a discount on Horizon themed gear at the PlayStation Gear store.
We're excited to see more from the franchise in the future, in whatever form it takes. We hope we don't have to wait too long to get a hint at what's to come.
