Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember amazes me with more promisingly engaging open-world fields
When Koei Tecmo published the public alpha demo for Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember digitally worldwide, I was already on a trip to Japan in order to attend Tokyo Game Show 2026. What I found at the annual event turned out to be an entirely different demo build that challenges its players to further extremes.
The demo build available at TGS 2026 featured a much shorter stage where I first had easier encounters against peon soldiers, but it would then ultimately lead to a very challenging boss fight against a demonized Cao Ren. All by myself.
Although I was eventually able to get the hang of Insight Jump, that was still not enough to get the best out of the boss. After a good number of defeats, the demo finally had enough and gave me the "Thank you for playing" splash.
Not long after I returned back home, I decided to download the Wo Long 2 alpha demo on my PC. This one has a lot more content to explore, even though it is still a small portion of what the upcoming full release would have to offer.
The public demo puts us in an early phase of the Battle of Changban, where we are tasked with helping Liu Bei find a safe escape route. The endgame of this demo features a different boss in the monkey-like Wuzhiqi.
Soon after accessing the rest menu, I noticed that we can now invite not just one, but up to two allied warriors to accompany our avatar. Having these companions also helps add more life to the journey, as they bring in more conversation lines at specific story points and quests.
This demo also primarily introduces new Insight parries that let you parry enemies' powerful attacks that are hinted when they glow red. There are three kinds of Insight parries available with different commands.
However, I'm not really liking how only one kind of Insight works against each attack, especially when the Insight Jump (R1+X on PS layout) has two variations that trigger differently based on whether you are airborne or grounded.
Wo Long 2 appears to employ an open-world field in a similar fashion to Nioh 3, but I am already liking the overall early look of the former over the latter at the same phase. I had noted how Nioh 3's open world was largely devoid of life due to an utter lack of allied NPCs.
In Wo Long 2's alpha demo, I am already seeing a good number of allied officers and soldiers hanging around in safe camps. Some of the side areas also have you rescue allied soldiers who, upon completion, can join the larger fights on your side.
In addition, exploring the whole field in Wo Long 2 also feels more rewarding than in Nioh 3, because you can find flag spots that can reduce enemies' morale levels. There are also other allies and open maps scattered all around the zone, which can point you towards more places of gameplay interest if you haven't been there yet.
Most of the features I've seen in the alpha demo would further heighten my expectations for the full release of Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember, which is slated to appear for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Switch 2, and PC via Steam next year on March 4. The public alpha demo is still available until September 30, and retaining the save data where you have beaten the Wuzhiqi boss by then will let you obtain the Fledgling Phoenix Helmet in the upcoming full release.
