Pokemon Sword & Shield: how to catch Magmar and where to get the Magmarizer to evolve to Magmortar

A bunch of classic Pokemon that were previouslt absent from Pokemon Sword & Shield make their return in The Crown Tundra DLC - and with those returning Pokemon come their evolutionary lines and certain evolution items such as the Magmarizer

If you've got a favorite Pokemon that's returning, you'll first need to know where to find it. That's what this page is about - for finding en 1 fire-type Magmar and its evolutionary line. That includes the baby pre-evolved form Magby and the gen 4 introduced evolution Magmortar.

Where to find Magmar, Magby and Magmortar in Pokemon Sword & Shield

Reintroduced in The Crown Tundra, Magmar and its related Pokemon are powerful fire-types that are beloved for good reason.

All three of the trio can be caught in Sword & Shield's new Crown Tundra area - or you can just catch one of the three and then evolve or breed your way up and down the chain.

The key to catching these Pokemon is that due to their fire-type, they're only comfortable in extremely hot weather. That means you'll need the weather conditions to be 'Intense Sun'.

This is rare in The Crown Tundra, but we know that May 31st is a guaranteed date when there's Intense Sun - so you can catch yourself a Magby, Magmar or Magmortar in certain areas on that date by manipulating your system clock - or any other date when there's Intense Sun, for that matter.

Here's where each of them is found in The Crown Tundra:

  • Magby: Random encounters in Slippery Slope, Frostpoint Field, Giant's Bed, Old Cemetery, Snowslide Slope, Giant's Foot, Three-Point Pass, Ballimere Lake
  • Magmar: Found wandering in Slippery Slope, Frostpoint Field, Giant's Bed, Old Cemetery, Snowslide Slope, Giant's Foot, Ballimere Lake
  • Magmortar: Found wandering around Slippery Slope, Giant's Bed, Snowslide Slope, Frigid Sea, Ballimere Lake

These spawns are the same regardless of if you're playing Sword or Shield - the important thing is that Intense Sun weather, however - these Pokemon won't spawn without it.

Where to get a Magmarizer Evolution Item in Sword & Shield

If you want to evolve Magmar into Magmortar instead of trying to catch the evolved form on your own, you'll need a Magmarizer - a special evolution item that allows Magmar to evolve into Magmortar.

All you need to do is give the Magmarizer to Magmar and trade it while it's holding the item. That makes Magmar evolve into Magmortar.

There's one Magmarizer evolution item hidden away in The Crown Tundra's Tunnel to the Top area; it's on one of the cliffside paths that leads down from the upper part of this area to the lower path of this area.
