Armor was a staple of the original Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy VII Remake, and so unsurprisingly it's also a huge part of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. Armor works very similar to how it did in Remake, except the new Item Trasnmuter function gives you a few more options, plus there are simply more armor options overall.

Armor is really important, as while you can augment your attack and defense stats in other ways, armor is the most straightforward way to increase your Defense and Magic Defense stats.

Armor also gives you extra slots for equipping powerful materia, and certain materia are life-or-death useful when slotted into your armor. Specifically, elemental materia can be used to completely nullify or even absorb elemental magic attacks against you, turning an enemy's greatest strength against them. While armor is undoubtedly more static than weapons, it's still a vital part of your character progression and battle preparedness, right up there with choosing the best party, synergy abilities, and enemy skills.

Throughout the course of the game, you'll find that most (not all) armors in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth fit one of four general categories:

Bracers: Armor with high stats that are “even” defensively between defense and magic defense, but have a low number of materia slots.
Armlets:: Similar to Bracers, except with lower overall stats in exchange for more material slots.
Bangles: Armor with higher defense than magic defense
Bracelet: Armor with higher magic defense than magicdefense
Armbands: Often similar to Bracelets, but typically with slightly higher stats or unique properties.

The Best Armor Picks in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth

Best Overall - Centran Bracer/Armlet: The Cetran gear is only available very late in the game, found in the Temple of the Ancients in Chapter 13, but for the late game and post-game Combat Simulator challenges, they're undoubtedly some of the best. Featuring a full list of of linked double materia slots and great stats, they can really open a character's abilities up.
Best Mid-Game - Gold Coral Armlet / Enhanced Gold Coral Armlet: Starting in the Corel region, you'll be able to use the Item Transmuter to Craft, and then enhance, the Gold Coral Armlet. This is the first armor in the game that slots up to four material, including a linked spot.
Best Late-Game Freebies - Valkyrian Bangle and Hades Armlet: Both are good armor with high stats and material slots that can be found in Chapter 11. The Valkyrian Bangle can be found in the Niddhog Grotto cache in Nibel Region, while the Hades Armlet can be found in the Shinra Manor dungeon during this chapter.
AP-focused - Chocobo Armband: Only has a linked set of two material slots, but anything sloted into this Armband will earn triple AP. Pair with an AP Up material to drastically increase the rate at which a single material can earn tons of AP.
