NieR: Automata has reached 5 million copies in worldwide sales

Square Enix announced through the Japanese official NieR Twitter account that NieR: Automata has finally reached a total of 5 million copies in worldwide sales. This figure combines physical shipments and digital sales through all available platforms. As NieR: Automata was originally released in 2017, that means it reached this milestone in less than 4 years.

The last figure revealed for the game by Square Enix was 4.85 million as of September 2020, and that was announced unconventionally at the Tokyo Game Show 2020 stream. A Square Enix staff member told PlatinumGames' Takahisa Taura that it had surpassed 5 million copies when, in actuality, it only reached 4.85 million at that point.

Square Enix then held discount sales of the digital releases in the hope that the game would actually reach that milestone. Today's announcement means that NieR: Automata has sold 150,000 more copies for the last three months.
