Square Enix reveals Valkyrie Elysium, launching in 2022 on PS4, PS5, PC
During today's State of Play livestream, Square Enix revealed the Valkyrie Profileseries would continue with Valkyrie Elysium - an action RPG for PS4, PS5, and Steam out this year.
It's been well over a decade since Valkyrie saw a new release outside of one mobile launch, and today's reveal brings an original story through Elysium. According to Square Enix, you'll return to the universe with fast-paced combat, a variety of weapons, and magical skills as a Valkyrie hand-picked by the biggest deity in town, the All-Father. Valkyrie Elysium is developed by Soleil.
There's familiar systems back with modern takes; as SE notes Elysium's dynamic combat "fuses features from across the series, such as finishing moves and combos, with a brand new real-time action combat system."
NieR: Automata character designer Yuya Nagai of CyDesignation will also revisit his partnership with Square Enix, assuming the same role on Valkyrie Elysium. Series composer Motoi Sakuraba returns with the project, too, along with other familiar gameplay elements like the Einherjar. In Valkyrie Profile and Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria, Einherjar were recruitable characters that had varying effects on the story and fought alongside you in battle.
Today's announcement was certainly a surprise given the decades between series releases, but not entirely unexpected. Last year, Square Enix trademarked the new game's official title in Japan, then followed up with filings in Canada, Europe, and Australia in February 2022.
Square Enix announced today that Valkyrie Elysium, an all-new action-RPG in the Valkyrie series, is coming to PlayStation 5 (PS5) and PlayStation 4 consoles and Steam this year. Developed by Soleil Ltd., Valkyrie Elysium draws on the richness of Norse mythology to present an original story set in a world on the brink of destruction, full of danger and fast-paced action combat.
The trailer provides a first glimpse of the game’s protagonist, a young Valkyrie who is entrusted with the fate of the world by the All-Father, the highest of gods and ruler of all creation. She will face various enemies on her quest and must utilize a variety of weapons, magic and the power of her allies to prevent Ragnarok—the destruction of the world. Valkyrie Elysium calls on its roots with music from series regular Motoi Sakuraba while driving the series forward in a fresh, new direction with classic combat mechanics, such as finishing moves and combo systems, reimagined for an action-RPG. The game also features character designs by Yuya Nagai of CyDesignation, Inc.
Valkyrie Elysium is not yet rated by the ESRB and will be available for PS5, PS4 and STEAM this year.
