Compile Heart announces strategy RPG Fairy Fencer F Refrain Chord for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch

Compile Heart has announced Fairy Fencer F Refrain Chord, a strategy RPG set to release in Japan on September 15 for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch.

Refrain Chord is being made by strategy RPG veteran developer Sting, who previously worked with Compile Heart on Hyperdevotion Noire: Goddess Black Heart.

In addition to the main character cast found in the original Fairy Fencer F including Fang, Eryn, & Tiara, Refrain Chord also introduces a handful of new characters. A key theme of the game is 'song', and the new songstress characters exhibit various singing abilities that can manipulate the battlefield in various ways. The 'Fairize' function from Fairy Fencer F also returns in Refrain Chord.

An announcement teaser trailer, our translation of game details from Weekly Famitsu magazine, and screenshots can be found below. The official website is here.

Gameplay Systems

Fairy Aria

Songstresses Fleur & Glace have special area of effect that buffs units on the same side of them while singing. Fleur's Aria will buff allies in range, while Glace's will buff enemies instead.

Dramatic Resonance

When Fleur & Glace sing at the same time, both of their Fairy Aria effects may overlap on the same spots. This will double the buff effects for both allied & enemy units, creating a high-risk & high-reward situation. Both songs will also overlap with each other and create a cohesive mashed-up song.

Basic Gameplay

The tactical RPG battle system will have square grids, and movement order will be determined by individual unit stats. Field elevation and unit direction will also play a factor in battles.

Fairize Transformation

The transform system from the original FFF returns in this new game. Filling up a gauge will allow the character to Fairize, which grants massive stat buffs. The Fairized form will also have a very powerful finisher attack.

Character Customization

This game will have robust character stat customizations like the first RPG. Fencers can have their equipment, Partner Fairy, and Sub Fairy changed. Fairies can have points allocated to their stats and any skills/abilities placed onto the slots.

Locate Influence

A treasure-hunting system where the player can stab Fury onto the ground to detect hidden treasure on the map. The treasures can range from rare equipment, items, to even a new battle stage. Furies with different element will discover different types of equipment and items.
