Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion is a new HD Remaster for PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, and PC

One of the most beloved Final Fantasy spin-offs is now no longer trapped in the purgatory of a discontinued platform, as it's been announced that Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion is heading to modern platforms this winter. It was revealed at the Final Fantasy VII 25th Anniversary Celebration Broadcast event.

The Crisis Core remaster features brand-new, but the primary draw is simply that you'll be able to reliably buy it. Back in 2008, Crisis Core was a PSP exclusive - and unlike several other Square Enix PSP titles, it never made the jump to any platform, nor was it ever available digitally. That meant it was only playable on UMD - meaning it wasn't compatible with the PS Vita, or even the PSP Go. For reasons unknown - probably related to legal rights around certain elements of the game - it was never sold in any format beyond its initial release.

That's all set to change, however, with the remastered version of Crisis Core poised to unlock the telling of this story to a whole new generation of Final Fantasy VII fans, including those who first experienced that universe with Final Fantasy VII Remake.

For those not in the know, Crisis Core is a FF7 prequel that tells the story of Zack Fair - the mysterious black-haired Cloud lookalike glimpsed a few times during the events of FF7 Remake, and in a few short and mostly optional scenes in the original FF7. As well as telling an original story about Zack in the lead-up to FF7 proper, it also revisits several events depcited in flashback in the original game's narrative, revealing what happened at these key moments from a different character's perspective.

It might also be pretty useful in understanding some of what will happen in the newly announced Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, which is the second part of the Remake series - which is set to be a trilogy.

Over on the Square Enix site discussing the game, they mention that its enhancements go beyond just visuals. Now, "the dialogue is now fully voice-acted, and there's a new arrangement for the soundtrack!"

Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion arrives on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC this winter.

The broadcast also marked the announcement of Crisis Core -Final Fantasy VII- Reunion, a remaster of the PlayStation Portable exclusive, Crisis Core -Final Fantasy VII-.
