Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis unravels its newest playable class that summons Familiars, the Waker

Sega welcomes the arrival of the Waker class in Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis with screenshots, details, and a trailer explaining what the new playable class can do.

Wakers have the unique ability to summon three different Familiars through a Harmonizer to aid them in battle. These Familiars are Fredran, Wulfen, and Marmelo. Fredran is a huge bird-like creature that can attack foes from afar. Wakers can ride them too. Meanwhile, Wulfen is more of an ape-like creature that prefers to get up close to dish out a lot of damage, especially with its powerful charge attack. Marmelo is the cutest of the bunch that looks a bit like a bunny and mouse; it specializes in defense and can unleash a counterattack once enough energy has been stored.

Sega released a 5-minute video showing the Waker in action and the different Photon Arts abilities it can use. There is even one that allows Wakers to call their familiars into battle at once. Wakers' skills primarily revolve around charging the meters of their Familiars, which fill up as Familiars hit enemies through a Waker's Photon Arts. Spend the meter charges to pull off even more devastating abilities.

Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis is now available on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC. It will be coming to PlayStation 4 on August 31, alongside the original Phantasy Star Online 2 game; the PlayStation 5 will support them via its backwards compatability feature.

SEGA today announced Phantasy Star Online 2 New Genesis, the free-to-play action RPG game, has released the newest playable class, Waker, a class that uses the Harmonizer to summon Familiars. SEGA recently revealed this highly anticipated class last month at ARKS EXPO 2022, the biggest gathering of Phantasy Star fans held in Tokyo.

Waker has three Photon Life Forms, called Familiars, that support them in combat: Fredran, Wulfen, and Marmelo. Unlike pets, Familiars do not need to be fed or raised. Players can use the Harmonizer to easily interchange their fighting style from ranged attack, short-range combat, and defense. Both Fredran and Wulfen can be summoned with Photon Arts. While Fredran specializes in long-range attacks, Wulfen prefers to get up close and personal. Marmelo can be summoned with Weapon Actions and can defend against enemy attacks as well as dish out powerful counterattacks.

The Harmonizer has its own gauge system called the Harmonizer Focus. Each familiar has a different Harmonizer Focus Gauge which fills up when attacking or defending against enemies. By consuming Fredran and Wulfen's Focus Gauge, the two can combine forces to unleash their powerful special move, Familiar Harmony.
