PanicBarn and No More Robots announce open-world soccer RPG Soccer Story for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC coming in 2022

Developer PanicBarn and publisher No More Robots unveil their newest project, a brand-new RPG revolving around soccer with Soccer Story. It is described as a "comedy open-world RPG about solving puzzles and saving the world with your trusty magic soccer ball." Soccer Story is coming some time in 2022 for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC (Steam).

A reveal trailer for Soccer Story gives a good idea of what the game is like. Players roam around 3D environments from a slightly tilt-shifted overhead view with a sprite-based character. Many of the environments have elements comprised of sprites, though there are a fair share of 3D assets as well. Players engage in many activities that utilize, well, the soccer ball that they always have with them.

Each member of the soccer team have their own strengths and weaknesses. In the trailer, a character named Kai is described as a "pass master" and has stat meters for speed, shooting, energy, and strength. Aside from exploring the open world, there will be times when people have to face off against an opposing team in soccer matches. There is also a brief shot of a segment that parodies the classic Final Fantasy turn-based battle interface as well.

PanicBarn and No More Robots said that Soccer Story will be "over 15+ hours of gameplay" filled with quests and side-missions. The game will have a 4-player local multiplayer match mode too.

Referee!! No More Robots (Descenders, Hypnospace Outlaw) and PanicBarn (Not Tonight) are today thrilled to reveal Soccer Story, a comedy open-world RPG about solving puzzles and saving the world with your trusty magic soccer ball.

It's been a year since The Calamity™ tore apart the very foundations of soccer as we know it. Since then, Soccer Inc. has made dang well sure that not a soul has been allowed to even look at a soccer ball, let alone kick it. It's a real Messi situation, no doubt.

But this is just the calm before the score. A magical football has now chosen you, The Savior of Soccer, and -- you'll get a kick out of this -- you've been tasked with saving the future of the sport, and bringing harmony to the world once more.

Can you remind everyone why there's just no substitute for soccer, or will there be a foul ending?

This sprawling open-world RPG asks you to use your head, with goal-oriented quests and side-missions to complete over 15+ hours of gameplay, and a huge range of activities and events to take part in.

Build your soccer career and do battle against the fiercest teams like literal sharks, toddlers, old-age pensioners and ninjas, while completing a single-player story full of quirky characters, quests, rogue refs and wacky soccer-adjacent sports.

On top of that, a four-player local multiplayer match mode with a full roster of teams and animal captains will make you dribble, and guarantee that Soccer Story remains a real keeper in your video game collection.

Soccer Story will launch later this year across PC, Xbox Game Pass, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation and Google Stadia.
