Super Mario RPG announced by Nintendo, launching in November 2023

Nintendo is finally putting Super Mario RPG on the Nintendo Switch. During its June 21, 2023 Nintendo Direct broadcast the company announced an update to the iconic SNES-era role-playing game. This new version, with updated graphics, is coming to the Switch on November 17, 2023.

Check out the trailer for it below:

Originally released on Super NES, Super Mario RPG has been overhauled with new graphics! Join Mario, Bowser, Princess Peach, and original characters Mallow and Geno, in an RPG filled with twists, turns and treasure. Mario must team up with his allies to face down a menacing force known as the Smithy Gang in order to recover seven stars and repair the Star Road. Whether you played the original game or have yet to take the journey, you can dive into this Nintendo Switch version of the very first RPG in the Super Mario series! Super Mario RPG launches for Nintendo Switch Nov. 17.

The Super Mario RPG trailer begins with the opening scene from the original SNES release, before showing off the game's updated 3D graphics. The game itself appears to play similarly to the first release, using a turn-based combat system and an isometric camera angle. However, all the characters and environments are rendered in 3D. Cinematic cutscenes also help tell the story. Characters like Geno, Bowser, Mario, Peach, Toad, and Mallow are also shown, with updated designs to suit the new graphical format.

Nintendo didn't mention whether other upgrades, features, or content would be added to this release of Super Mario RPG, so it's not clear whether this should be considered a "remake" or a "remaster", but outside of the visual changes, the game appears to hew fairly closely to how many players remember the SNES version.

Super Mario RPG will launch on the Nintendo Switch on November 17, 2023.
