Baldur's Gate 3 Patch 1 contains over 1,000 fixes and tweaks

Baldur's Gate 3 is, by many measures, a landmark achievement in scope and scale for a tabletop RPG-based video game. However, that achievement has come at a cost of sorts, namely in the form of rough edges - bugs, quirks, and other instabilities that at times can threaten the sheen of Larian Studios' latest release. The team is on the job, though. On August 25 the first major Baldur's Gate 3 patch went live for PC, and according to Larian, the patch contains over a thousand distinct fixes across the entire game.

If you already own Baldur's Gate 3 via Steam, the patch should be queued up and ready to download or applied via Steam's auto-update feature. You should also have full access to save files created after launched, as the patch does not break compatibility with saves. Larian did mention that patching "expansive systems" like Baldur's Gate 3's comes with many unknowns, and called upon users to reach out to the official support site if they encounter issues with the patch.

The patch itself tackles fixes and tweaks in all areas of the game. Major fixes include "show-stopper" bugs that prevented quest progress or locked out interactions, as well as UI hiccups that caused players to be unable to use the reaction menu if they saved the game in the middle of combat. Other more minor fixes had to do with story flow and logic, particularly concerning Wyll's dialog in camp, Shadowheart's romance, and the shared consequences of getting on Minsc and Jaheira's bad sides. Additionally, fixes in the story logic made it harder to hook up with Gale or break up with Astarion by "accident". Fixes to the animation also make shared kisses between characters of significant height difference (such as a gnome or halfling character and Karlach) look better.

Some other tweaks made the game's low-difficulty Explorer Mode even less risky (by doubling the players' HP bonus), improving gold bounties in certain spots, and fixing up how spell difficulty is applied when multiclassing.

There are too many fixes to list down in this post, so if you're curious as to the exact changes, check out Larian's full patch notes. Larian was also quick to emphasize that fixing the game isn't over, and promised that a second patch with "significant performance improvements" is coming soon, with details to be released closer to the patch's debut.

Baldur's Gate 3 is available for PC and will launch on PS5 on September 6, 2023. An Xbox Series X|S version is in development and scheduled for a 2023 release window.
