1991 PC-9801 release of classic action RPG Fray gets EGG Console Switch port on July 3

D4 Enterprise has revealed that they will add yet another classic action RPG to the EGG Console lineup for Nintendo Switch with the 1991 PC-9801 release of Fray. This port will be available worldwide in Japanese on July 3 at $7.16.

For the record, the company had also ported the same game to modern Windows PC via EGG Project for both this PC-9801 version and the initial MSX2 release that came out in December 1990.

In addition, the game's description notes how the eponymous protagonist Fray originated from the Xak series. The first two entries of the aforementioned title have also been made available on Nintendo Switch, but the third and last entry in the trilogy is so far only available for EGG Project PC in its PC Engine and PC-9801 versions.

You can find screenshots and descriptions for Fray right below. Note that while the primary gameplay interface is available in English, the story segments will still only be available in Japanese.

An action RPG featuring Fray, a popular character from the “Xak” series! Enjoy a comical, lighthearted story full of excitement!

This action RPG, released in Japan by Micro Cabin in 1991, is a spin-off starring Fray, a popular character from “Xak.” Unlike the serious tone of the Xak titles, this features a lighthearted and fun adventure.

The game is a top-down action RPG where you can freely explore towns, but in adventure stages, the screen scrolls only upward. You’ll need to use charged attacks and jumping to push forward. Note that the scrolling in adventure scenes is not forced like in shooting games— it scrolls upward only as you move, allowing for a more relaxed play style.
