Path of Exile 2 for Nintendo Switch 2 isn't on the radar at the moment for Grinding Gear Games

Path of Exile 2 from Grinding Gear Games is getting a major update with 0.3.0 next week on August 29 for PC and consoles. During a media briefing for this update a few days ago, I had a chance to ask Path of Exile 2 Game Director Jonathan Rogers a few questions during a group interview.

I was curious on whether there was any progress to improving the cross progression experience with PS5, potential Nintendo Switch 2 support, optimization including Steam Deck, and also how the team is handling balancing both Path of Exile and Path of Exile 2 content. You can find the responses from Path of Exile 2 Game Director Jonathan Rogers and my questions below. The answers have been edited for clarity.

RPG Site: Has there been any progress on getting cross progression improved on PS5 with in-game purchases and supporter pack content carrying over and stash tabs?

Jonathan Rogers: That's just a contract limitation, so there's not really a lot that we can do about that unfortunately. It would effectively just require a different situation with Sony there.
RPG Site: For those who haven't played Path of Exile 2 at all so far, has there been anything done in this major update to improve the onboarding?

Jonathan Rogers: Probably the main thing that new users are getting out of this patch is that there's a lot less kind of what you call noob traps in the game now. Effectively, we're trying to take a lot of the things that are worse and improve them. That should overall be easier for new players, but the primary focus really is just making sure that overall there's a lot more build diversity and the way we do that is by buffing things that are currently bad. So that's going to help any new players who are just sort of picking things in randomly as well.
RPG Site: Is the team working on Steam Deck optimization?

Jonathan Rogers: I wouldn't say we are working on Steam Deck optimization specifically, but we are generally optimizing the engine. In fact, there's a very large engine update that's happening in this patch as well. I didn't talk about it in the video [presentation] because it's kind of a bit dry, but ultimately you should see performance better, loading time is better and that kind of stuff, as well as less stuttering if we're doing our job right, obviously. You can never quite tell until you deploy it, but there are a lot of engine organizations happening in this patch.
RPG Site: Are there any plans for Nintendo Switch 2 support down the road?

Jonathan Rogers: There certainly aren't any plans. It's like not the most obvious platform for us. I'm not going to say it's never going to happen, but it's certainly not on our radar as far as things at the moment.
RPG Site: How has it been for the team balancing both Path of Exile content and Path of Exile 2's early access updates? Should we still expect another major update four months from this one in Path of Exile 2?

Jonathan Rogers: Absolutely, yes. So, we've committed to doing updates every four months for both games, and that'll definitely be the case going forward. It isn't the easiest thing to do as a studio. It's certainly quite a lot of effort and work to get that to happen, but it is very important I think. We will always have a release even if we have to cut scope or other things in one game or the other, we'll always do it. I do think that we're delivering a large amount of content regardless, so it is working, but it is very hard. We had a period there where Path of Exile wasn't getting content updates, and that was really not very good for the community.

Path of Exile 2 Early Access is available now on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (Steam, Epic, and standalone).
