Dynasty Warriors Origins' continuation may be expanded from duology to trilogy

Famitsu has published a new interview with Dynasty Warriors Origins' producer Tomohiko Sho ahead of the release of the Visions of Four Heroes DLC. One of the highlights of this interview is the hint of plans for turning Origins into a continuation series evolving from a duology into a trilogy.

For reference, prior Dynasty Warriors iterations had usually covered a large part of the historical Chinese Three Kingdoms period from the Yellow Turban Rebellion in the 180s until the Battle of Wuzhang Plains in 234 AD (with the more recent iterations expanding the coverage to the Fall of Shu Kingdom in 264 AD).

Dynasty Warriors Origins, however, trimmed the coverage down to just the Battle of Chi Bi / Red Cliffs in 208 AD. Tomohiko Sho plans for the remainder of the covered period to be featured in the sequel(s) to Origins.

You can find our translations of the specific interview segment right below:

Famitsu: As expected, if a DLC is also being sold, we think there would be many more voices anticipating a sequel or a continuation to the story though…?

Sho: It is the case with this DLC as well, but when we really try to create it, there are also several hurdles that we have to surpass. I do want to further polish the unique gameplay system the Dynasty Warriors series has, and there are also a whole lot of new things we want or have to work on.

Famitsu: We’ve also previously heard how you already have the plots and such.

Sho: The topic is going to be the same as the interview back then during [base DWO] release, but we originally depicted up until the Battle of Chi Bi in this game, and if we were to make a sequel, I thought of making a duology where we would depict up until the Battle of Wuzhang Plains. But as we ended the development, the game depicted up until the Battle of Chi Bi with much more density than we guessed.

In that case, if we maintain this density in the sequel, it would be impossible to depict up until the Battle of Wuzhang Plains (strained laugh). That’s why in the middle of the development, I ended up thinking that we would have to make it into a trilogy. And in order to make those a reality, what I can say as a producer is… I kindly want you to buy this DLC, and I want even more people to play the base game (laughs). That’s why I hope you keep on supporting us!

Dynasty Warriors Origins is presently available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC via Steam. The Nintendo Switch 2 edition, along with the Visions of Four Heroes DLC for all platforms, will be available soon on January 22.
