Kyoto Xanadu Rei and Fuka character trailers published with more gameplay details
Nihon Falcom has been gradually releasing more details for Kyoto Xanadu: The Blooming Phantom. Other than more character biographies (which we have also been gradually covering in a dedicated article), the company has also added more descriptions on the combat and school systems in this upcoming action RPG.
In addition, Falcom has also started uploading individual character trailers for Kyoto Xanadu. The first two characters featured here are the protagonist Rei Kamiya and the main heroine Fuka Rikudo.
You can find our translations of the recently revealed gameplay features after the new character trailers below. Kyoto Xanadu: The Blooming Phantom will be available first in Japan and Asia for Nintendo Switch 1&2, PlayStation 5, and PC via Steam on July 16; the Western release date is still pending as of this writing.
Basic Combat Controls
- Normal Attacks
Basic physical attacks from the Soul Device. Rapid inputs will let you unleash a 3-combo attack at most. There are also airborne-exclusive normal attacks if you launch it mid-air.
- Strong Strikes
Each character has their own unique physical attack with their Soul Device. Combining this strike with the Normal Attacks will let them unleash derivative attacks with effects like "Increased damage against flying enemies" or "Blow away nearby enemies".
- Evasion
Other than providing an invincibility period, you can also use Evasions to slip to an enemy's behind. Learning specific Abilities will let you perform Aerial Evasions and Evasive Attacks.
- Jump
The jump height will differ based on how long you press the button. Learning specific Abilities will let you do derivative actions like recovering from a blown condition, kicking walls, and double-jumping.
- Shooting Attack
By spending the Shooting Gauge, you can launch ranged attacks that unleash Spiritual Bullets.
- Special Bullets
Learning specific Abilities will let you fire elemental Special Bullets, such as the Guided Missile (Fire), Bomb (Wind), and Laser (Ice).
- Defense
The character enters a defensive stance for as long as you hold the button. Defending right at the moment an enemy attack lands will trigger a Parry that completely negates damage and also flinches the enemy.
- Flash
A successful Parry on a predictable attack will show a button that will unleash a Flash Attack when pressed. This is a powerful attack that can also deal damage to the enemy.
- Soul Accel
During this mode, Strong Strikes will be enhanced, and it also becomes easier to launch a Flash Attack from a Parry.
- Secret Combo Strike
When the Secret Art Gauge is maxed out, the character can launch a Secret Combo Strike that deals damage across the whole field.
Academy Lessons
By taking lessons in the Hirasaka Academy, you can gain the three Soul Points "Wisdom, Valour, and Virtue" that are required to enhance the Soul Device weapons.
- Action Cards
When preparing for lessons, you can use Action Cards to heighten your focus and increase the Soul Points you can gain. Each card has different amount of focus points and CP (Cost Points). You can use multiple Activity Cards until your CPs are all used up.
- Support Cards
Using these cards will let you gain advantageous effects. For example, setting Suzume's card will let you add another Action Card to your hand when placing the cards. Some of the Support Cards will also have CPs that are shared with Action Cards in a given turn.
- Sacred Tree
While exploring the Xanadu Labyrinth, you can find Illusion Elements by destroying terrains or cleansing impurities. These elements can be gathered in a specific bottle and brought back to the real world. Offering these to the Sacred Tree will give you various rewards.
However, gathering Illusion Elements more than the bottle can handle will cause the bottle to break and inflict Illusion Element Poisoning, which will reduce your HP and disable HP recoveries, item usages, and Soul Accels. These symptoms will also grow worse as time passes.
