Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion launches on Nintendo Switch 2 today

Via the September 9, 2026 Nintendo Direct broadcast, Square Enix and Nintendo have announced the surprise release of Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion on Nintendo Switch 2. The game will be available via the Nintendo eShop "later today," but as of this writing only the Nintendo Switch 1 edition is visible on the store. Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion is the remastered edition of Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII, an action-RPG prequel to Final Fantasy VII. It originally launched on the PlayStation Portable handheld in 2007 and 2008.

Reunion features enhanced HD graphics, full voice acting, tweaks to the battle system, and a rearranged soundtrack. The story remains the same as the original, and as such stars Zack Fair, a promising SOLDIER operative assigned to investigate the disappearance of other SOLDIERS. The adventure brings him into contact with characters like Sephiroth, Cloud, Aerith, and others, setting the stage for the events of Final Fantasy VII

In his review of the game, Scott praised the remaster's graphical enhancements and noted the increased pacing of each encounter thanks to the combat system tweaks, though he said that despite the changes, the game's structure is closely bound to the design decisions that informed the original, PSP-sized adventure.

Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion is now available on Switch 2, PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Switch 1. You can find the Switch 2 trailer with more from Square Enix below:
