Nioh features multiple PS4 Pro modes, will be published by Sony outside Japan

While Nioh developers Team Ninja are owned by established third party Tecmo Koei, their owners won't publish their latest effort in the West. The title will instead be published as a PlayStation 4 exclusive by Sony Interactive Entertainment.

Likely thanks to its backing from Sony direct, Nioh will also feature some of the better support for the PlayStation 4 Pro system that's been announced thus far. It'll still be published by Koei in Japan.

The game will feature two modes each for 1080p displays and full 4K and HDR displays - depending on what you play the game on, you'll get slightly different results.

PS4 Pro users on 1080p can choose between 'Movie Mode' and 'Action Mode'. Both will offer a 1080p output, but movie mode will feature higher quality anti-aliasing at a frame rate of 30fps. Action Mode will instead output without the better anti-aliasing but at a smoother 60fps.

PS4 Pro owners with the 4K and HDR TV to match will choose from the same modes, but they perform differently there. Movie Mode will display at a full 4K resolution of 3840x2160, again at 30fps. Action mode, meanwhile, will remain at 1080p upscaled to a 4K signal in order to retain the smooth 60fps action.

Even regular PS4 users will get a similar choice, though of course the game won't look quite as good or perform quite as well on the less powerful vanilla system.

We've looked at Nioh in the past and really rather liked it: It seems like a cool mash up of some more traditional Japanese design sensibilities with Dark Souls.. which is no bad thing. We'll keep covering the game in the run up to its February launch, so stick with us.
