Sword Art Online: Fatal Bullet's Digital versions and Season Pass are a bit confusing so let's sort it out

Bandai Namco has released more information on the pre-order and bonus items for Sword Art Online: Fatal Bullet. The publisher has already announced pre-order and Collector Edition information back in October. Check that link out first to learn about the Collector's Edition while we try to consolidate the Pre-order and Digital bonuses here.

Normal Pre-order Bonuses

Previously, the pre-order bonuses of the game were announced with the following: Those who purchase the game in North America or Europe will receive a unique Silver Assault Gun and Asuna and Kirito SAO avatar costumes in-game. This was seemingly for all versions of the game (PS4, XB1, Steam) in both North America and Europe.

Digital Deluxe Pre-order & Season Pass

Today, Bandai Namco announced that a Digital Deluxe version of the game will also be available in both North America and Europe. This edition comes with Asuna and Kirito ALO costumes, the Gold Assault Rifle, as well as the game's Season Pass, in addition to the above pre-order bonuses. This version of the game is more expensive than the standard version, costing $74.98 on Steam and $84.99 on PSN and Xbox Store. However, there are some key differences in regions for this version.

  • North America: The Digital Deluxe edition is available on all three platforms, but the PSN version gives the buyer an extra SAO theme for their PS4.
  • Europe: We're not sure if this is intentional, but the Digital Deluxe edition seems to be available only on Xbox One and Steam. The publisher's press release seems to explicitly avoid mentioning PlayStation at all, although the PS4 logo is at the bottom of the infographic. We've reached out to Bandai Namco Europe for clarification.

Update: Bandai Namco EU confirmed that the Digital Deluxe version is not available on PlayStation 4 in Europe.

As for that Season Pass? It comprises of three separate yet-to-be-announced DLC packs plus three exclusive weapons: the photon sword pink, the photon sword green, and the peculiar guitar launcher. As of now, the Season Pass seems to be only available in the Digital Deluxe versions of the game and is not yet priced separately. Considering the costs of the Digital Deluxe versions, the Season Pass on its own would probably cost around $25.

Comprehensive Infographic

Bandai Namco US was gracious enough to provide an Infographic that summarizes most of the above information. Note the PS4 theme bonus might be exclusive to North America.

Steam Pre-orders

The Steam version of the game has its own pre-order set up that works differently than the console counterparts. Basically, the more people pre-order, the more bonuses are released. Here's the quote from Bandai Namco and a screenshot of the Steam page:

Sword Art Online: Fatal Bullet fans that pre-order the Digital Edition for PC Digital will receive several rewards according to the level pre-order reach.

  • The first level contains the Kirito SAO costume, the Asuna SAO costume, and the fancy silver assault rifle.
  • The second level includes the Kirito ALO costume, the Asuna ALO costume, and also the gold assault rifle.
  • The third level will earn you the exciting Sword Art Online Re: Hollow Fragment, once it is released.

Note: Steam has two versions of the game, Standard and Deluxe. It seems these bonuses are for either pre-order. This means purchasers may be able to get the ALO costumes without getting the Deluxe edition, although they would miss out on the Season Pass.

However, the third reward is interesting. Sword Art Online Re: Hollow Fragment is a PS4 remaster of a Vita game which released back in 2015. It never got a PC release. It also hasn't been announced for a PC release, yet. Another Sword Art Online game, Hollow Realization, did get a PC port after its console release so there is precedent there. Did they mean to announce a new port in this manner? Do you get a code for the PS4 version for some reason? Who knows.

Oh and Bandai Namco also released the opening movie for Fatal Bullet.

Sword Art Online: Fatal Bullet is set to release on February 8 in Japan and February 23 in North America and Europe for PlayStation, Xbox One, and Steam.
