Yume Nikki is now available on Steam with a new project teased

In what can only be described as an out-of-nowhere release, after a decade of lying dormant, cult classic horror title Yume Nikki is now available on Steam.

Up until now, fans who were interested in picking up the game had to download a version that was unofficially translated into English off of various fansites. There was also a browser version released back in 2016. However, now that it's on a revered digital distribution platform like Steam through game publisher Playism, the indie darling finally has a central location it can call home.

For those unaware, Yume Nikki, as we mentioned, is a horror adventure game created using RPG Maker 14 years ago. It tells the story of Madotsuki, a hikikomori (or a shut-in) who absolutely refuses to leave her tiny apartment for fear of the outside world. The only way to exit her room is to fall asleep in her bed and wake up to explore a labyrinth of dream worlds accessible through a hub.

Its existence spread like wildfire through the Japanese imageboard 2chan and influenced a wide range of inspired fangames like Yume 2kki and Yume Nikki 3D and original titles such as Lisa The First, Ib, and even Undertale.

Alongside the release comes a bit of a teaser for a brand new Yume Nikki project to be revealed in two week's time. The page for the countdown timer lists original creator Kikiyama continuing to be the copyright holder with Kadokawa Corporation being involved. Last year, Kadokawa announced a mobile version of Yume Nikki during Comiket, but this could be some sort of licensed spin-off.
