Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent announced for Android and iOS devices

Square Enix and Acquire have announced Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent, a free-to-play single player RPG for iOS and Android devices. A debut trailer for the game can be found below, and the official website can be found here. The game is set to release in 2019 in Japan.

According to an interview in Famitsu with Square Enix producers Tomoya Asano and Yoshiki Yokoyama, Champions of the Continent takes place in Orsterra before the events of Octopath Traveler and the game will have no multiplayer elements. In fact, like Octopath Traveler, Continental Champion will feature 8 characters that can be recruited in each region of the game at launch. Also, as can be seen in the trailer, 8 characters can participate in battles at the same time.

The game will have three primary story routes, each tied to a certain antagonist character. These three routes are labeled Wealth, Power, and Fame. Like the original, players can progress these stories at the same time or in sequence, however you choose.

Movement on the game map is 'on rails', where the player will swipe in a certain direction and their character will follow in that direction. Square Enix states they wanted to do something similar to how they handled the Bravely series with a mobage-style game after the original release. However, Square Enix wanted such a game with a feel much closer to the original title this time around.

There will be new towns and areas not in the original Octopath Traveler, and characters from Octopath Traveler will appear in Champions of the Continent.
