Bioware: Mass Effect 2 PS3 runs on the Mass Effect 3 Engine

Bioware Community Manager 'Evil' Chris Priestly has posted up a podcast on the official Bioware blog to celebrate the fact that Mass Effect 2's PS3 version has gone gold, meaning the discs have gone off to be prinited. In the podcast he chats to Jesse Houston, the Producer of the game, who goes into detail regarding some of the new features in the PS3 version.

The most interesting tidbit in the mini podcast comes when Houston talks about how he and his team aimed to improve the graphics in the PS3 version of Mass Effect 2, revealing that the PS3 version of the title is actually running on the technology that'll end up driving Mass Effect 3 in Holiday 2011.

"One of the first things you're gonna see is improved graphics," he begins, then elaborating further. "We actually created the engine for Mass Effect 3, and used that to make Mass Effect 2 PS3. So we took the content, the story and all the other assets that made up Mass Effect 2 and we put it into the Mass Effect 3 engine, and that's what we're actually delivering."

In the interview he also explains how the PS3's Bluray technology allowed them to fit the entire game on one disc rather than the 360's two and also bundle the lion's share of the game's Downloadable Content on the disc - only two currently released DLC packs will be available as an actual download in ME2 PS3 - the rest will be on the disc.

We're due to get our hands on our copy of Mass Effect 2's PS3 version some time before Christmas, and we'll be sure to bring you our full review before launch, so stick with us!
