Petit Planet - the first life sim from Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail creators HoYoverse - is set to finally fill that Animal Crossing shaped hole in your heart and on your Switch 2 storage when it launches on the console in 2027.

Petit Planet isn't the first time that a HoYoverse title will draw comparisons to Nintendo titles, but this is the first time that one of the studio’s games is coming to a Nintendo system. For Nintendo diehards, Petit Planet will be an introduction to what HoYoverse has to offer.

In choosing the Switch 2 for Petit Planet's console debut, HoYoverse is declaring its intention to seriously court the family gaming market. By bringing one of the company's F2P games to this most kid-friendly of consoles for the first time, and replacing the often-competitive character gacha with theoretically lower-pressure monetisation via purely aesthetic cosmetics - as well as switching from the company's usual curvaceous anime-style designs to chibi critters  who surely will appeal to a more wholesome audience – it's clear that Petit Planet is aiming to court parents looking for wholesome fun for the family.

Aside from being a clear spiritual sibling to the Animal Crossing franchise, Petit Planet feels right at home on the Switch 2 in its own right. Its visual design contrasts vividly coloured characters and environments with the permanent backdrop of a deep starry sky, taking full advantage of the system's graphics capabilities. The user interface, meanwhile, strikes the right balance between comprehensive and clean, reading just as well when viewed handheld as when docked to a bigger screen.

Playing the game using the Switch 2 Joy-Con controllers feels natural too, with even building placement – often the trickiest aspect of a life sim to get right on console – coming across as smooth and intuitive.

If you're eager to jump in and don't want to wait for the Switch 2 launch, there's good news — Petit Planet launches on PC and mobile devices on December 4th, with the Switch 2 version following sometime next year. While cross-platform saves aren't fully confirmed for the Switch 2 version just yet, previous HoYoverse games have tied progression to the player's account rather than platform or device, and the developers have confirmed that this will be the case for Petit Planet on PC, Android, and iOS.

You can learn more about the game on its official website.
