Super Mario RPG - How to fight Culex
Back in the original Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, the ultimate challenge that players faced off against was Culex. This all-powerful enemy looked and sounded like it was ripped straight out of Square’s Final Fantasy IV. After the Super Mario RPG remake was announced, there was a lot of discussion as to whether or not this inter-dimensional encounter would carry over to the new version, and if so, in what regard.
Longtime fans can breathe a sigh of relief as Culex, in all of his pixelated glory, makes his return in the remake, and the method to face off against him is the same as in the original. Battling him fills out an important entry in the Monster List and is the first of the Mario RPG post-game super bosses, for you completionists out there.
To do so, follow these steps:
Once you have defeated Punchinello in the mines of Moleville, you will be able to find a small girl hidden behind some boxes in the center of the town. She says she will give you a shiny rock she found if you give her some fireworks.
To get the fireworks, head into the nearby shop and speak to the gentlemole in the back that will sell you some fireworks he has invented for 500 coins. This may be a bit steep when you first have the option to buy the fireworks, so feel free to come back whenever you have some coins to burn!
After purchasing the fireworks from the mole, head back to the girl hiding in the boxes and give her the fireworks in exchange for the shiny stone and just hold on to it.
Later in the game, you will come to Monstro Town, where you will find a row of doors with one odd-looking door. With the shiny stone in your possession, approach the door and agree to use the stone. This will unlock it.
When ready, head inside to face this mighty foe and listen to an excellent rendition of the Final Fantasy IV boss fight theme!
Later in the game, you'll be able to battle a 3D Culex variant.
