Final Fantasy VII Remake Limit Breaks: how to unlock the ultimate moves for every character

Final Fantasy VII Remake is a faithful reimagining of the original FF7 for the most part, and one returning feature is of course Limit Breaks, the ultimate moves that let you dish out enormous amounts of damage in battle.

Just as in the original FF7 there are different levels of Limit Break - though in FF7 Remake there are actually only two levels and two limit breaks for each character. The first is available to each character from the moment you can first play as them, while the second is an optional unlock related to side content.

In real terms, Cloud, Tifa and Barret’s limit breaks are all functionally the same - the first deals a lot of damage, while the second raises stagger...while also dealing lots of damage. Aerith’s two limit breaks are related to healing and nullifying damage. To unlock the second Limit Breaks, you’ll need to obtain ‘Legacy’ manuscript items through optional arena battles.

There is also a third Limit Break accessible by every character - Refocus. This Limit Break is accessed via materia, and alongside summons and enemy skill it's one of the most unique materia, detailed in full in our FF7 Remake Materia guide. This guide naturally has spoilers for the nature & location of the second limit breaks.

How to change Limit Breaks in FF7 Remake to use your second Limit Break

Once you unlock your second Limit Break, you’ll actually need to equip it - and you can’t have both your first and second limit breaks accessible to you at the same time. Only one is available to you - and you have to choose.

To make that choice, head to the game’s Main Menu and hit the Battle Settings option, which is underneath the equipment and weapons and Upgrade Weapons options. In here you can adjust battle shortcuts, but also your limit break for each character. Select your limit break and flick back and forth between the two as you wish.

If you have the Refocus materia equipped, once your limit gauge is full you will be able to choose between both your selected limit and refocus.

Cloud Strife’s Limit Breaks

Level 1 Limit Break - Cross-Slash

  • Damage your foe while making an ominous symbol with your slashes.
  • Unlock Method: Cloud begins with access to this Limit Break.

Level 2 Limit Break - Ascension

  • Unlock Method: Receive the ‘Legacy: Ascension’ manuscript as a reward for Corneo Colosseum Battle Challenge ‘Cloud vs. Wild Animals’, available after chapter 9.

Alternative Limit Break - Refocus

  • Refocus lets you spend your Limit Break to divide your ATB bar, giving you three ATB action uses rather than two in the same charge time.
  • Unlock Method: Refocus is accessed by equipping the Refocus materia, and can be used by any of the characters. It can also be equipped at the same time as other Limit Breaks - when using your limit, you’ll be given a choice of which to use.
