This walkthrough is a bullet point guide for players who don't want to keep referring back to paragraphs within a lengthy walkthrough, but do want to make sure that they don't miss anything that will prevent them from finding all items, mini medals, etc. Luckily, nothing in Dragon Quest I HD-2D is permanently missable.

For most locations, the provided in-game map is all you need for general exploration. As you play through the game, you'll eventually gain the Nose for Treasure ability, which can be used to verify that all items in each area have been collected. Further into the game, you'll earn the spell Snoop is useful for finding items in your current location, as it'll highlight items around you, even hidden ones.  Following this guide should make it easier to verify that you've found everything.

What this walkthrough will do:

  • Offer a minimalist walkthrough so you know what you need to do at any point in the game.
  • Point out items, mini medals, and achievements so you can easily complete the game 100%.

What the walkthrough will not do:

  • Offer in-depth strategies for bosses.
  • In-depth Dungeon Walkthroughs. Basic directions will be provided to help navigate to all items, but other than that, using the map (new to this version of Dragon Quest I) makes most locations easy to navigate.

1. Opening

Starting Options

  • If you have save data for Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, you will get a notification about bonus items in special treasure chests.
    • Dragon Quest I - In the Tantegel Inn
    • Dragon Quest II - In the Midenhall Inn
  • You can choose between Dragon Quest I and Dragon Quest II at the start. For this walkthough, you should select Dragon Quest I, of course.
  • Select your video, language, and difficulty settings, and start the game.
  • After all of the opening cutscenes, you'll find yourself in the Tantegel throne room.
  • In the menu, under Helpful Settings, you can simply turn on a toggle to show you Treasure Chest locations and Secret Spots, as well as objective markers. You can also adjust battle, difficulty, and text speeds in other available menus.
    • While treasure chests and Secret Spots can be toggled to appear on the map, hidden items will still be hidden, and this guide will point these out.

Tantegel Castle

  • You are simply tasked to head to Erdrick's Hollow. We'll go ahead and explore the town before heading out. Note that you'll have to manually save at the church in town, starting out. Of course, autosaves will behave as normal.
  • Many doors and chests in Tantegel Castle are currently locked. Throughout Dragon Quest, you'll gain three colored keys that unlock these doors. These are the Thief's Key, Magic Key, and Ultimate Key, which unlock Red, Blue, and Black locks, respectively. I'll make sure to note these doors/chests when we get those keys later in the game.
  • An NPC on the right side of the castle's first floor will heal you for free. Otherwise, most NPCs in the game just provide flavor text.
  • Items (For each Town or Dungeon in the game, we'll list out all the items you can pick up.)
    • Pot on 2F balcony (take south exit from castle 2F), west of the doorway in the corner - 32 gold
    • Barrels on the north side of the castle 2F balcony - Medicinal Herb, Seed of Magic
    • Barrel in castle backyard shed - Chimaera Wing

Tantegel Town

  • For each Town location in the game, we'll point out hidden items to pick up and any other notable events. For now, check out the Item Shop (feather icon) and Equipment Shop (crossed swords icon).
  • You can rest at the Inn (bed icon) for a fee. You can save at the Church (trident icon).
  • You can speak with an NPC in the lower right part of the city to see a quick scene with the Dragonlord's Castle.
  • A female NPC near the Item shop will start to follow you if you speak with her. If you sleep at the Inn with her in tow, you'll get the "A Night to Remember" trophy/achievement. She otherwise serves no purpose.

World Map - Tantegel Area

Exploration Note

Dragon Quest I is an open-ended game. You can explore about 2/3s of the entire world map before even setting foot in Erdrick's Hollow. Feel free to explore how you want, but this page will explore through the world in a reasonable order. I'll also offer some notes about places to train up or gain money, if desired.
Enemy Note

This page will list all enemies found in each area of the game. There is no trophy or achievement tied to this, but you can see a list of Defeated Monsters in the menu.
Secret Spot Note

Secret Spots are hidden outposts found on the world map that lead to a small explorable zone. These often have items or mini medals. Remember, you can turn on a setting in the menu to have Secret Spots appear on the map. They will start as vague pulsing rings, clueing you in on the location at first. Once entered, Secret Spots will be marked as a dot on the map.

Also, a few Secret Spots do not appear on the map until near the end of the game. This is noted in the penultimate section of this walkthrough.
Shiny Spot Note

'Shiny Spots' on the world map are simply items to pick up. Many times these are consumables, but sometimes you'll find decent equipment. For each section of the world map, we'll list out the Shiny Spots we've found.
  • Feel free to train up a little bit just outside of Tantegel for EXP and gold. You'll earn your starting levels very quickly, especially if you have the Elevating Shoes.
  • Buy equipment in Tantegel as you feel fit. All of these items can eventually be found in the world for free, but you can always get more money if you need it.
  • The first place we'll head to is Wayfarer's Chapel, which is N and a little E of Tantegel, past the mountain.

  • Before we head to Erdrick's Hollow, we'll go ahead and explore the area around it first. Galenholm is a town in the far northwest of the world map. So basically, we'll explore the NW continent first before heading to our objective at the Hollow.
  • Stop by Erdrick's Hollow to place it on your map, but we'll explore this in just a bit. Locations can be fast-traveled to using a Chiaera Wing or Zoom, eventually.

Mini Medal Note

Just like many other Dragon Quest games, Mini Medals return in Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake. These are collectibles that can be turned in for unique items & equipment later in the game. There are 40 total Mini Medals to find in DQ1, and this guide will point them out as we pick them up.

Roadside Inn

  • Roadside Inn is SW of Erdrick's Hollow.
  • Go ahead and explore this area, since it is small. While you can exit Roadside Inn to the south to the next continent, hold off on this for now. Enemies become more difficult past the border.

  • Galenholm is at the far NW of the world map.

  • Note: Items in the Item Shop and Equipment Shop here can be quite expensive. Don't worry about affording these yet. You can get through the early dungeons without these items with ease. We are simply visiting the town a little bit early. If you want to grind for money, that's best done around Kol to the East, which we'll visit shortly.

Scroll Note

You'll pick up skill Scrolls throughout the game, which are new to the remake. These teach a skill to the Hero as you use them. Since Dragon Quest doesn't have a party, you don't need to make any decisions about *who* to use the scroll on. So, just use these on Hero as soon as you get them. There is an achievement for, eventually, learning all Spells & Abilities.

2. Erdrick's Hollow & Kol

Erdrick's Hollow

  • After exploring the NW continent of the world map, we're ready to tackle Erdrick Hollow.
  • If you want to continue exploring the world before heading here, feel free!
  • By the way, Hero will learn 'Zoom' at level 13, if you don't have it already. This lets you warp to places you've already been.
  • There's a scene at the start of the dungeon, as well as a scene at the end of the dungeon.
  • When you get to the end, make sure to inspect the gravestone a second time.

  • Walking through the poison swamp (purple area here) will damage you slightly as you pass through it, but you can use Safe Passage.
  • You'll see a cutscene the first time you enter the bridge heading to the NE-most continent.

3. The Thief's Key and Craggy Caves

Galenholm

  • After seeing the flashback scene with Gwaelin, you'll see a new scene in Galenholm. 

Roadside Inn

  • After seeing the scene with the Swindler in Galenholm, the scene will continue in Roadside Inn.
  • Now we'll continue south to the western continent of the world map. You could have done this right from the beginning of the game, if you wanted to.

World Map - West Continent

  • Our goal is to head to Craggy Cave. This is found at the dead end between the mountains.
  • Before going through Craggy Cave, we can stop by Nameless Ruins and Faerie Village, which are just a bit further south.

  • If you want, you can continue heading south of Faerie Village to the SW continent, but the enemies here will be a significant increase in difficulty.

Quagmire Cave

  • Quagmire Cave is located South of Kol on the NE continent.
    • You may have explored this already.
  • As you work your way through the dungeon, there is a cutscene partway through B1. This is related to the Princess Gwaelin quest.

Rimuldar

  • To proceed with the story, you need to visit the Warlock of Doorlocks in the NW building, which requires the Thief's Key. You'll have to head to the Cave of the Dwarves after this.

  • This dungeon is a little bit trickier than previous ones. If you follow the item list below in order, your path through the dungeon should flow well, room-by-room.

5. Faeries and the Magic Key

Faerie Village

  • Talk to the faerie in the western house to rest for the night. You’ll see another cutscene with Princess Gwaelin after this.
  • You'll need to head to the Field of Flowers, which is found on the SW continent.

  • Our goal is to head to the Field of Flowers to the SW, but we can make a few stops before we get there.
  • The ruined town of Damdara is found in the NE part of the desert here.

Citadel of the Monarch of Medals

  • The Citadel of the Monarch of Medals is located on the southern tip of the SW continent.
  • This is where you turn in Mini Medals! Feel free to turn in what you have so far.
  • There are also six locked chests here: two red, two blue, and two black.
  • Items - Open the two red chests for:

Faerie Village

  • After seeing the scene in Field of Flowers, return to Faerie Village. You'll fight a boss battle as soon as you enter.

Rimuldar

  • Give the Sunup Syrup to the guard captain.
  • During the scenes, you'll obtain Princess's Necklace.

Cave of the Dwarves

  • If you Zoom here, you’ll warp straight to B3.
  • Give the Craftsman the medicine for a scene.

Rimuldar

  • Visit the Warlock of Doorlocks (upper-left house) for a scene. You’ll obtain the Magic Key. This unlocks blue locked doors and chests.

Damdara

  • Return and speak to Zalen for a scene.

Faerie Village

  • Head to the NE house for a scene. You’ll obtain Soul Sigil.
  • Give the Craft-Master the Wellspring Crystal for Water Sigil.
    • You should have picked up the Wellspring Crystal in the Cave of the Dwarves.
  • While here, use the Magic Key to open the Blue Chest for Tempest Shield

Weirdwood

  • You can only solve this dungeon after saving Princess Gwaelin and receiving her necklace.
  • In order to proceed, you need to wander around the exits for a bit - Lost Woods style. Eventually, after getting lost as the exits loop you around in a circle, a scene will take place where Gwaelin will undo the mirage.

  • Then go to the Shrine of Rain for a cutscene with Dream-Whisperer to be taken to Western Isle.

Western Isle

  • Pick up Erdrick’s Helm in front of you
  • Pick up Two-leaf clover in a dead patch of grass SE of the grave
  • Pick up Mini Medal (#39) at the dead end of the top pier
  • Talk to Dream-Whisperer to return to Shrine of Rain.

Zalen Sidequest (finale)

  • Return to Zalen in Rimuldar. You get the "A New Song of Erdrick" achievement for finishing this event.

Crafting

  • The Craft-Master in Faerie Village can “Craft” items with some of the key items you've been picking up. There is no other use for these items, so feel free to use them all. You'll gain the "Master Crafter" achievement for making one of each item.

Dragonlord's Castle

  • This is the final dungeon in the game. It is relatively long, but you'll end up creating a shortcut between the entrance and the final boss.
  • On 1F, interact with the throne from the back to continue on.
  • There’s a scene on B6. There’s also a warp you unlock from the entrance to B6.
  • After you pick up Erdrick's Sword, make sure to equip all Erdrick equipment to obtain the "Erdrick's Legacy" achievement.
  • After picking up the final Mini Medal, be sure to turn these all in at the Citadel for the "Medal Maniac" achievement.
  • If you want to grind EXP, Liquid Metal Slimes appear fairly readily at the castle entrance.
  • When fighting the Dragonlord, you are given the option to join him. Choose to join him to unlock the "Dealing with the Devil" achievement. Don't worry, this doesn't actually affect the game. You'll end up back in Rimuldar, and you'll have to head back to the Dragonlord to fight him as if nothing happened.
    • Tip for Dragonlord: This boss has two phases, but you will gain about 20,000 experience after the first phase, if you can set your exp to level up between phases, it'll reset your HP and MP before phase 2.
