Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes' Mysterious Mercenary Trailer Showcases Surprising Twist

Update:

The Japanese official website and Twitter account for Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes have also been updated with fresh information following the new trailer reveal. It confirmed that the action spinoff will have a Class Change system similar to the original strategy RPG iteration. Any character will be able to learn and change to most of the available classes—save for a few ones exclusive to certain characters. The class will determine the action moveset, the equipable weapon type, and affinity against other unit types. When a character has mastered a class level, they will be allowed to unlock a higher version of the class.

The Japanese pages also included biographies for the new characters heavily featured in the game's key art:

Shez (voiced in Japanese by Tasuku Hatanaka [male] or Miyu Tomita [female]) - A lone mercenary who has no relatives. Shez encountered Jeralt's group during a job, and then got soundly defeated by the Ashen Demon Byleth. The protagonist then trained in a forest to make up for the loss. That's when Shez met with students from the Garreg Mach academy.

Arval (voiced in Japanese by Mutsumi Tamura) - A mysterious being who appears inside Shez's dreams. Arval rescued Shez right before the latter was killed by Byleth. Since then, Shez becomes able to hear Arval's voices telepathically inside their head.

Earlier this morning, Nintendo posted a new trailer for their upcoming Fire Emblem spin-off, Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes. This Musou spin-off is an alternate story to the events of Fire Emblem: Three Houses, and set in the same universe. The game was originally announced on February 9th, with a release date scheduled for June 24th of this year. This trailer also reinforced this release date.

The announcement trailer seemed like it would be heading towards a "golden route" for the characters. It initially started with the three house leaders fighting each other, before teaming up near the end of the trailer. Byleth is also shown fighting against a purple-haired character, whom did not appear in Fire Emblem: Three Houses.

In this new trailer titled "Mysterious Mercenary", it is revealed that the mysterious purple-haired character is actually the protagonist, and they are fighting against Byleth, who appears to be the antagonist. The new protagonist, with the default name "Shez", can be male or female and players can also make Byleth male or female. As in Fire Emblem: Three Houses, it also appears that players will once again choose which house leader to join, which makes a "golden route" seem unlikely. The respective house leaders' retainers Hubert (Black Eagles), Dedue (Blue Lions), and Hilda (Golden Deer) were also officially revealed. The trailer also revealed new timeskip versions of Mercedes, Dimitri, and another purple-haired character in the foreground which appears to be Lorenz.

The trailer went into a little bit of detail on how the game will function. It appears to have most of the same battle prep sections as Fire Emblem: Three Houses did. Players will be able to explore their base camp, share meals with allies, train, and unlock new classes. Battalions will be making a return in this game, and players will be able to issue orders to their allies on the battlefield. Among one of the units that players will be leading is Monica, who was a NPC in Three Houses.
