New The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom gameplay footage shows off new powers and locations

Nintendo showed off a new, extended look at gameplay from The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Glimpses of the game's new systems and Link's new abilities were shown off in a new "gameplay demonstration" narrated by Series Producer Eiji Aonuma.

Check out the footage below.

A sequel to 2017's The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Tears of the Kingdom's title was officially confirmed in September 2022.

The trailer itself shows off a detailed look at several gameplay sequences involving Link's new suite of abilities. The abilities include a Recall ability, that rewinds an object's movement. Aonuma uses the Recall ability to reverse the movement of a rock falling from one of Hyrule's "sky island" locations, using it as an impromptu elevator to reach the island.

One other ability demonstrated was "Fuse", allowing two or more objects to be fused together, adding new traits and abilities. Aonuma fused a tree branch to a boulder to improve its combat capabilities, as well as fusing a stick to a pitchfork to create a long trident. Fusing an arrow to a Keese Eyeball creates a homing arrow. Aonuma also revealed that the "vehicles" seen in earlier screenshots and trailers were created using "Ultrahand", an ability that allows players to manipulate and physically attach objects in the environment to each other. The Tears of the Kingdom gameplay demonstration showed off the creation of a simple fan-powered raft to cross a river.

Movement-enhancing abilities like "Ascend" were also demonstrated, which allows Link to fly up to and pass through the ceiling of any space to the other side. Aonouma used Ascend to quickly transit to the top of a hill by entering a cave at its foot and emerging from the ground at the hill's apex.

The gameplay demo concluded with the reveal of a special The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Switch OLED console. The console will launch on April 28, 2023, just ahead of the game's launch on May 12th. It'll cost $359.99 USD, and features special coloration on the dock and Joy-Cons patterned after the game. A Switch Pro Controller and Switch carrying case will also be sold separately for $74.99 and $24.99 USD, respectively.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom launches for Nintendo Switch on May 12, 2023.
