FFVII's PC rerelease is exclusive to the Square Enix Store - but the game files are still on Steam

Square Enix's confirmation that they're going ahead with a rerelease of a PC version of Final Fantasy VII has sent fans into a frenzy. One aspect of the announcement is being largely overlooked - the game has been announced as an Exclusive for the Square Enix online store.

Square Enix have operated an online store selling digital versions of their PC titles for a short period of time now.

Last year we reported that the PC versions of both Final Fantasy VII and VIII were available privately on Steam. Tweaks had been made to the code of Final Fantasy VIII to make it run better on modern hardware - a nod, it seems, to the development that has just been announced.

Given recent events, it only seems right that we revisit Steam via the Steam Registry Editor - something anyone can do - to check if the games have been removed. They're both still there.

We no longer have access to the files and so can't check if they've been bought up to date with the PC version's new features - but hope for a Steam version can at least persist a little. It just seems it won't be an option at launch.
