Super Robot Wars Y world background and first demo footage revealed

Bandai Namco published more details on Super Robot Wars Y at a new livestream dedicated to the game held today. Staff members from the company explained the crossover game's world background settings while showcasing a demo build that will be playable at physical events around the world.

The stream started with a pre-recorded segment where the game's producer Kota Toma and the scenario writer Masahiro Nagura talk about SRWY's world settings. The team wanted to use a new single alphabet letter to ensure long-time series fans that this game will play just like any prior SRW releases. Amid the fewer letters still available (The team had previously used T, X, V, Z, A, R, D, J, W, K, L, and F), they opted with Y since the letter can also look like a two-way branch or a three-way intersection. It ended up being depicted in the story, as humanity is faced with two tough decisions. The team added that while SRW 30 had a military-like setting, SRW Y will focus more on the post-war civilian livelihoods.

The team also introduced the original characters appearing in SRW Y. The protagonists Cross and Forte Tsukinowa also act as guardians to protect the entire A.Advent ship, including the owner Echika and the livelihoods of people living in the large civilian area inside the ship. In addition, they also introduced the other three new original characters:

  • Anina Selvania (voiced by Rina Sato) - Echika Y. Franburnett's private tutor who teaches her the essentials of governance
  • Norvey Dickens (voiced by Takashi Matsuyama) - Captain of the ship A.Advent who previously served in the military
  • Mina Naraib (voiced by Karin Nanao) - Operator on the ship A.Advent who also previously worked under Norvey in the military

In the next segment, Kota Toma had a live gameplay session of a demo build of SRW Y that mainly showcases the overhauled user interface. It also shows more gameplay changes not shown in prior streams, such as the unit's list of attacks now only taking a small part of the screen so that the player can view the exact ranges of the attacks in the game's maps. In addition, warship captains now have exclusive buff commands for a specified unit (e.g.: Majestic Prince's Suzukaze can raise a unit's morale) in lieu of EX-Orders from recent games.

Toma also promised that the demo will be available in physical events both inside and outside Japan. The first confirmed event is an advance trial meeting dedicated to the game in Tokyo, Japan, on June 21-22.

Super Robot Wars Y will be available worldwide for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam on August 28.
